Wolff compares Red Bull to Ferrari’s battle when Mercedes was almost driven to break-even

Toto Wolff has compared this year’s championship match with Red Bull to a Mercedes race with Ferrari in 2018 and 2019, when the intensity of the fight saw his team almost at breaking point.

While Mercedes has a steady record of championship until 2014, Ferrari rose to its strongest challengers in both 2018 and 2019, and after 10 rounds of the 2018 season, Scuderia led the silver arrows 20 points in the builders ’championship, while Sebastian Vettel was eight points ahead of Lewis Hamilton in the drivers.

Mercedes and Hamilton are renewing their rivals in the second half of the season, while in 2019 Ferrari once again had a fast car, and the new recruiter Charles Leclerc led their responsibilities before the Mercedes-Hamilton combination won again.

Assessing the Mercedes season before the summer break, Wolff said the current challenge at Red Bull’s Silver Arrows is just 12 points ahead after the Hungarian GP recalled Ferrari’s race, and explained how much it affected his team.

The last few months have been really intense, he said. We had a good time in the early spring, we were able to compete hard in Portimao and Barcelona, ​​and then we had a few really bad races, starting in Monaco and then in Baku. [races which began a run of five straight wins for Red Bull].

But since then, we’ve somehow found our grip, we’ve learned, we’ve noticed how our car works with new tires, and I think we’re back in a much better place in Silverstone and Hungary.

This season is very intense, but also 2018 and especially 19 when we fought Ferrari was sometimes very difficult. We’re really working to cross boundaries, and that also means pushing each other almost to the breaking point to win the championship.

Mercedes can lead at the moment builders’ investments, but Wolff insists they continue to chase Red Bull in terms of the raw performance of their car, and despite the workloads and strains of work, he says his team will enjoy the second half of the season.
