New York Yankees put Gleyber Torres on injured list, expect star stop to remain for 10-20 days

New York Yankees stop Gleyber Torres was added to the list of injured on Monday when an MRI revealed a left thumb sprain, the team announced.

New York manager Aaron Boone, who spoke before the Yankees opened the road series against the Kansas City Royals, said he believed the club got “good news” because he expected Torres to be only 10-20 days old.

The timing is not good for Torres, who had warmed up alongside his accelerating teammates. He won a 3–4 Sunday series final vs. the Seattle Mariners, and has three homes and 13 RBIs after the club’s return to the All-Star break. The Yankees lost 2-0 to Seattle on Sunday, but took three of four in the series and had won eight of the ten matches played last Monday.

“I think we were worried it was going to get more serious,” Boone said. “Realistically, we have a better idea over the next couple of days. I think we kind of expected the worst.”

Boone also told reporters that Torres, who did not make the trip with the club to Kansas City, will soon see an expert.

During the fourth set on Sunday, Torres slid the other back to steal and injured his fingers. Boone said after the match that Torres’ condition worsened as the day progressed.

New York is already without a second pillar on the left side of the field, in third baseman Gio Urshela. He has a tight left hamstring, but he participated in defensive drills and ran to bases on Sunday before the trip. He can be activated on Wednesday.

The year has been confusing for Torres, as have many Yankees who have fought for most of the season. The double All-Star, who hit 38 home teams in 2019, has only six this season, and he didn’t hit the first until May 9th.

The Yankees also chose right-back pitcher Luis Gilin’s Triple-A Scranton / Wilkes-Barreen and resembled right-hand pitcher Nick Nelson. To fill the Torres list, the club selected Scranton / Wilkes-Barre striker Andrew Velasquez for the contract.
