The Davis Cup will return to the West Side Tennis Club in September

The old US Open areas will be buzzing again in September.

The historic West Side Tennis Club, which hosts the U.S. Championships, and its current successor, the U.S. Open, in 1923-77, hosted the Davis Cup for the first time since 1959, when South Africa played Venezuela from 18-19. The incident was postponed from Venezuela for security reasons in the midst of a pandemic.

The top five match series will be played after the Open over the weekend on a hard field at the 98-year-old horseshoe-shaped stadium that last hosted the New York Grand Slam in 1977.

The last Davis Cup was held at the stadium in 1959, when Rod Laver, Roy Emerson and Neale Fraser led Australia to a 3-2 victory over the US team of Alex Olmedo, Butch Buchholz and Barry McKay.

South Africa’s top players in the ATP rankings include Kevin Anderson, a former US Open and Wimbledon finalist who reached number one in his career No. 5. No. 49 Lloyd Harris, who won Rafael Nadal last week in Washington, and former Australian Open and Wimbledon singles final Raven Klaanen, which ranks 23rd in doubles. Venezuela is led by 585th place Ricardo Rodriguez.

While Forest Hills is synonymous with the former home of the US Open, the West Side Tennis Club has also hosted many Davis Cup matches, Wightman Cup matches and the Tournament of Champions men’s event for many years. We are excited to add a new chapter in our famous tennis history with this series from South Africa and Venezuela.

The last time the Davis Cup match was played in New York was in 1981, when the United States took over Czechoslovakia in the semi-finals of the USTA National Tennis Center.
