This year’s biggest battles were expected to wait. Errol Spence was scheduled to defend his semi-weight-type championships against legendary Manny Pacquiao at the FOX PPV Main Event on August 21, but the Texas suffered a retinal tear at training camp and had to withdraw from the match. He will be replaced by Yordenis Ugas, the WBA semi-weighted champion who was promoted to “super” champion after Pacquiao was declared “break champion”.
Pacquiao hasn’t fought since he won an exciting victory over Keith Thurman in July 2019, when he earned the WBA crown with an amazing performance. He is considered one of the greatest of all time in the sport, having held at least one championship in eight weight classes.
Ugas has lost only once in 12 professional matches since 2015. A lone fault came on offer for the WBC championship in March 2019, when he rejected the split decision for Keith Thurman. He gathered back to defeat Omar Figueroa Jr., Mike Dallas Jr. and Abel Ramos.
