The Sutton Cricket Club legend will be honored at the memorial service

The organizers of the memorial event hope that the local community will respect the popular villager.

David Gibbs was the captain, fieldman and chairman of the Sutton Cricket Club and encouraged younger players to join the club through a coaching program.

Vice President Martin Paul played with David when he joined the club in 1978.

He had the ability to get the most out of each player and he respected the whole team.

In the early 1980s, Sutton lost much of his older players.

David and current president Clive Hughes had a proactive view that this would be a problem for the club, as there was no other team at the time to make up for player losses.

David and Clive set up a cricket coaching program as they approached Ely and Witchford High Schools and were able to form another team from there.

The Youth program is still ongoing, as the club now has two youth groups and a Dynamo team for under-11s.

In addition to cricket, David ran a business with his wife Margaret in Ely.

Many of his coached youth remember and celebrate their commitment to them, as did some of us who had the privilege of playing cricket and spending time with him, Martin said.

A commemorative game will be held at the Sutton Cricket Club in honor of David Gibbs.

David was a friend to everyone who knew him, and he not only loved and respected all of his teammates, but also the opponents of the club.

The bench will be donated to the Sutton Cricket Club in memory of David and the funds raised during the day will go to the British Lung Foundation.

A memorial game between David Gibbs Memorial XI and President XI will be held at the Station Road Club on Sunday, August 22nd.
