The Eden Prairie Hockey Association is adding pull tabs to fundraising

The Eden Prairie sports team hopes to reverse reduced participation with an innovative solution: charity gambling.

The Eden Prairie Hockey Association (EPHA) began selling pull tabs on July 12 at Champps Restaurant and Sports Bar. It also plans to sell them at Bowlero from August 16th and next winter at Green Mill Restaurant.

The Bet tab is a small gambling card whose tab can be pulled back to reveal whether prizes have been won. EPHA believes that pull tabs can raise funds that lower the cost of playing hockey for young people and thus increase participation.

The Eden Prairie High School hockey team won the state 2AA championship this year, and the girls ’hockey continues to grow. Overall, however, the participation of the Hockey Federation has declined since the 2005 peak. Last season, EPHA had 453 young participants.

We fought hell out of the EP to save hockey, said Linda Elmquist, president of EPHA, a non-profit organization run primarily by volunteers.

Youth sports have fallen around. In Bloomington, the Hockey Association has merged from three organizations into one. In Eden Prairie, the number of players this year is 60 percent of what it was 10 years ago, Elmquist said.

Elmquist believes the figures have fallen mainly due to program costs.

The initial cost for a new player at age 5 can be $ 120-250. However, a player up to 12 years old like Pee Wee AA can pay over $ 3,000 a season. Ice time, tournament costs, and coaching are all cost-increasing factors.

In addition, EPHA pays $ 500,000 a year for ice age, Elmquist said.

Meanwhile, Minnesota hockey teams strive for diversity and inclusion in their teams. High participation costs can prevent.

So it’s no surprise to know that many organizations like EPHA see charity gambling as a solution.

There are 97 youth hockey programs in the state with charity licenses, and net income after taxes is $ 13.3 million. The White Bear Lake Area Hockey Association had gross revenue of $ 24.1 million in 2020, and the netting program netted $ 3.5 million. Some hockey associations have funded improvements to community buildings and the ice rink.

An amendment to the order was required

Still, it took a change in city supplies to make it happen in Eden Prairie.

On 5 January 2021, EPHA met with members of the City Council of Eden Prairie to informally discuss the idea of ​​a charity game and the need to review city regulations to allow it. About a month later, on 2 February, the Council finally adopted an amendment to the regulation.

The biggest change is that organizations involved in charity gaming in Eden Prairie no longer need to own a restaurant or bar where they play. The original setting dates back to when there was the Eden Prairie American Legion and it owned the building on Eden Prairie Road.

Now the organization can rent space for gambling activities, typically from a small area inside a busy bar or restaurant. This allowed the Hockey Federation to obtain a city permit, which they have so far used to make deals with Champps, Bowler and Green Mill.

Overall, the recently revised regulation will also limit the number of permits currently issued by cities, but more so if the city’s population grows. In addition, any single restaurant or bar can host only one organization, and licensed organizations must allocate 10 percent of their net income to the city fund, which helps cover Eden Prair’s public safety costs and 1 percent of net income. the city will help regulate this special program.

The Minnesota Gambling Control Board also regulates licensed organizations to ensure operational integrity and allow for the legitimate use of net revenue.

So far, no other organization has applied for permission under the new regulation, said Mayor Rick Getschow.

The rules for charity games and the resources needed to implement them are likely to deter many small groups. Careful information needs to be kept, volunteers need to be recruited and trained, extensive promotions need to be made and much more.

Mastering traction tabs is an art, he added. If you leave the boxes out for too long, all prizes will be paid. If you pull them too early, players will complain. There’s a subculture that you can’t believe with traction. Players move around to new locations and play new games.

EPHA has also traditionally organized lotteries and fundraisers to reduce registration fees, hardware costs and other costs.

Adding a game of chance with little luck will help Eden Prair’s youth hockey return to its heyday as it continues to struggle for high school championships.
