Kate Cross takes three early hits to attach Covid-depleted superchargers
Manchester Originals 127 for 2 (Lee 68) Northern Chargers 126 for 5 (Wolvaardt 75 *, cross 3-19)
The choppers are in second place on the table and have one match, tied for Trent Rockets and Oval Invincibles, both of which now have a game on hand.
Lee led the way when the Originals set a bubbling pace in Powerplays and broke 11 limits to reach 50 without a loss after 25 balls, the women’s top 100 Powerplay scores to date.
Emma Lamb fell shortly after 10, Wolvaardt caught up well with Linsey Smith, but Lee continued to conquer. He scored 52 balls out of 27 balls before smashing the first six of the match, and his compatriot Mignon du Preez dropped the goal from 40 to 50 balls.
The Superchargers made a key breakthrough with 29 balls left when Wolvaardt snatched the Lee border from the Kalea Moore border and dropped 68 of 40 balls with 13 four and one six – the Originals needed 25 of 29 deliveries.
But du Preez took the baton and hit the ball with 77 for six to ease his nerves when he finished with 24 to see the Originals home.
After winning the throw, Originals captain Cross led the ball – took three goals when the Superchargers released the lowest Powerplay score in the women’s 16 to 4.
Cross caught Lauren Winfield-Hill from behind the third ball before Hannah Jones grabbed the key to Jemimah Rodrigues, the top scorer of the tournament, which Elllie Threlkeld brilliantly broke into seven.
The Originals skipper returned to the bowl with 10 balls and discarded Alice Davidson-Richards and Bess Heath without a single round and left the Superchargers to four.
Three consecutive boundaries halted the recession as Wolvaardt and Sterre Kalis began to rebuild patiently and waved the hosts a total of more than 50 55 balls.
Kalis had run out of 19, ending a useful 38-run stand, but the Superchargers ended strongly by taking 72 runs with the remaining 31 balls. Wolvaardt played the lead role, splitting 50 balls out of 44 balls before smashing 20 of the last five and finishing with 75 out of 51.
The Superchargers were without three players when a positive test by one team member forced two other players to isolate themselves. The originals again lacked the injured Harmanpreet Kaur, who is returning to India to spend time with his family before the national team series against Australia.
