New Pickleball courts coming to Wrightsville Beach

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) – Four new temporary pickleball courts are coming to Wrightsville Beach, and permanent fields will come later.

Pickleball combines badminton, table tennis and tennis, and players hit the ball back and forth with wooden paddles.

To play sports, the 200-member Wrightsville Beach Pickleball Group currently has to record tennis courts at certain times.

Due to the popularity of the sport, the city has agreed to temporarily replace one tennis court with four pickleball courts.

“A great win for basketball at Wrightsville Beach, we’ve been working on this for many years and it offers four of our own fields where people can come play,” said team leader James Chaffins. “Visitors, residents, people in Wilmington, New Hannover County, can come play Pickleball without the hassle of setting up the nets.”

The city plans to install five or six permanent pickleball fields later, once the plans have been finalized and approved.
