When are the team exams for Cariboo Hockey?

It’s billed as a summer development camp, but in reality, this weekend is a trial period for hockey players trying to earn seats on the city’s representative teams.

Last weekend, Cariboo Hockey’s under-18 triple-A and double-A male teams tested their teams and this weekend, starting today, the Northern Capitals women’s U-18 triple-A, U-15 triple-A cougars and U- The 15 double-A Bobcats get a chance to influence the coaches during the first three days of Kin 2 ice.

It’s been a long year of forced pandemic breaks for the region’s best small hockey teams, which last season were limited to just a few show games and months to practice their hockey skills in front of empty stands in arenas.

“It’s time,” said Cariboo Hockey CEO Trevor Sprague. “We’re slowly getting back to normal and there’s a lot of common sense there. It’s exciting to get back to normal routines – we have parents in the stands, we have games going, the referees are gone, so it’s healthy for everyone.

The Northern Capitals, led by head coach Mario Desjardins, will play their first intasquad game today at 5.45 pmat Kin 2. Rehearsals will continue on Saturday at 9.00, followed by a game at 5.45 and a second game on Sunday at 9.00.

The U-15 team will be on ice for the games in Kin 2 tonight and Saturday at 7.30pm and again on Sunday at 12.30pm

The Northern Capitals are booked to play in the Firestarter tournament in Calgary on 16-19. September.

“Our two U-18 teams are hunting for the Telus Cup (men’s championship) and the Esso Cup (women’s national championships) – we want to go to our national championships every year and have applied for a Mac tournament,” said Sprague.

Tyler Brough will begin his sixth season as head coach of the Cariboo Cougars U-18. Other head coaches in Cariboo Hockey include: Stew Lambert (U-17 triple-A), Mirsad Mujcin (U-15 triple-A), Matt Planetta (U-18 double-A); and Derek Wood (U-15 double-A).

The season kicks off on September 25 with the triple A Cougar / Northern Capitals teams, while the double-A Bobcats will start the match game on the first weekend in October.

Cariboo Hockey’s annual outdoor game at the Ernie Sam Memorial Arena in Fort St.James is back on schedule for the 2021-22 season and the showcase event for the Northern Capitals and Cariboo Cougars U-18 teams has brought Fort St.James back as a candidate for the Kraft Hockeyville competition.
