The Texas feed game still finds a foundation vs. a disciplined defense

The first pre-season camp of the season is in the books, and Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian will evaluate what he saw on Saturday differently depending on which station group it was.

Of course, the quarterback is the most significant as the season approaches, and it doesn’t look like anything happened on Saturday when neither defender resigned. In fact, Sarkisian was less than happy with what he saw the younger Casey Thompson and the reddish-brown freshman Hudson Card.

I wanted to cross the border with them and watch the decision-making, Sarkisian said. And frankly, I don’t think either guy was playing at a level that I find acceptable, and I think they found acceptable.

Sarkisian noted that both Thompson and Card had a wonderful training week, but this preparation did not translate and apply Saturday’s battle.

The key to the exercise is to apply the preparation to the presentation, and we were too inconsistent today.

Of the two, the only turnover was the abduction thrown by Thompson.

As for their continued development throughout the fall camp, Sarkisian likened it to teaching a child to ride a bike and that they remove exercise bikes now and live with growing pains instead of doing so during the season when rather they learn to pedal faster.

To that end, the Texas receivers didn’t do too much service to Thompson and Card today, and Sarkisian noted that they were just a little away and lacked a sense of urgency.

We need to be better. I didn’t think we were playing with the sense of urgency we were used to playing with, Sarkisian said. We were a little gone. I expect more from them. I have seen more of them, so I expect more from them. Here’s a combination of a game builder and wide receivers clearly that part of our game isn’t yet where it should be.

As for the silver mountain in the dark cloud, Sarkisian is sure of what Texas has back. In addition to having star-caliber talent in Bijan Robinson and a workhorse backup in Roschon Johnson, Sarkisian keeps a quick change from Keilan Robinson’s rear speed and said Texas is in a four-deep position to include Daniel Young.

The defense, on the other hand, looked good and disciplined and did not allow explosive plays or free spins. In addition, Sark praised all three of Pete Kwiatkowski’s defense units.

I think we have a deep group beyond this delusion. I think apparently now adding [DeMarvion Overshown] behind that front is very active, they are distracting, Sarkisian said.

In addition to the trenches, he praised the line-building forces and transfer experience of Ben Davis, who rushed today after losing some leg injury to Ray Thornton, Devin Richardson and Ovie Oghoufo, whom Sarkisian emphasized as physical. More specifically, he said they are experienced, and once they have played a lot of football at a high level, they can cut it off and play with the speed and physicality that the staff is looking for.

At the same time, the secondary activity continues just fine.

I feel good in a secondary event, Sarkisian said. I think I found the right combination of people.

Sarkisian chose Anthony Cook as the person who impressed him, saying he plays physical and healthy football. Other noteworthy included Chris Adimora, who competes with Cook for the starting nickel role, DShawn Jamison and all three safe BJ Foster, Brenden Schooler and Jerrin Thompson.

At this point, talent is in place, but Texas, which offers plenty of options, is still trying to find the right combination in the secondary.
