Padres vs. Dimondbacks – Game summary – August 15, 2021

PHOENIX – Fernando Tatis Jr. took a few drills and stepped into the dough box with his usual swing. One thought swirled in his head as he returned to the San Diego lineup.

Let them remember why they missed you, he said with a grin.

The 22-year-old All-Star certainly achieved this goal with a brilliant return from the list of injured.

Jake Cronenworth also went deep, helping San Diego end a four-match losing streak.

For the first time in his professional career, playing the right field and hitting the lead, Tatis twice tore the third base line to start the game.

He hit his first homer this afternoon in the third steep single shot that cleared the wall from the left. His 33rd home team came in fifth and was more of a low line, but cleared the wall from about the same point and led Padres to a 2-1 lead.

Fernando is Fernando, Padres’ first baseman Eric Hosmer said. It doesn’t cease to amaze any of us.

It was Tati’s Fifth Multiplayer Game this season and No. 8 in his career.

Cronenworth’s two-shot shot later in the fifth drove San Diego 4-1. It was his 17th season.

Tatis added a single loaded at the eighth base that brought home Victor Caratin and Trent Grisham. Tatis had been on the injured list since July 31, when he had partially moved his left shoulder for the third time this season.

The electrifying star usually plays a short stop, but Padres decided to move him on the field for now. Hopefully there’s less chance of injury, so he can stay in lineup all season.

He wasn’t challenged much on the field on Sunday, but he made a few routine catches.

It was pretty cool, Tatis said.

Tati’s return is a huge addition to Padres, as there are 15 players on the injured list and they have risen to the NL West table. They still have another NL-wild card slot in the playoffs, but they feel the pressure from the reloading Reds, Phillies and Braves.

The San Diego season undoubtedly peaked the previous Saturday, when beginner pitcher Tyler Gilbert threw a non-batsman at the beginning of his first career against Padres.

Hosmer said the team met after an embarrassing loss, hoping the discussion could help them focus on the final part of the season. In one game, it seemed to work.

Sometimes during the season you get lost in events, Hosmer said. “It’s such a long, exhausting season, it can sometimes knock you down.”

Craig Stammen was Padres ’starting propeller in a bullfighting game. He made two goalless innings by giving up two hits. Reiss Knehr (1-0) won after giving up one set in two sets.

Zac Gallen (1-7) started the Diamondbacks and gave up four runs with five innings.

Right-handed was one of the top pitchers in the national league in 2020 and finished ninth in the league’s Cy Young Award poll, but the 26-year-old has struggled for much of this season. He has a 5.03 ERA.

There have been difficult trips, Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said.

Arizona’s Josh Rojas hit the homer alone in fifth. It was his 11th season.

Padres: Placed RHP Yu Darvish on the 10-day list of injured with lower back tension, retroactively to Friday. Knehr was promoted from Triple-A El Paso. … To give Tat a room on the list, Padres chose OF Brian O’Grady as Triple-A.

Diamondbacks: RHP Merrill Kelly and LHP Joe Mantiply were placed on the COVID-19 injured list. Called LHP Miguel Aguilar and RHP Sean Poppen from Triple-A Reno.

Padres will visit Colorado on Monday. RHP Antonio Senzatela (2-9, 4.71 ERA) is scheduled to start in the Rockies. Padres has not announced a starter.

Diamondbacks will be off on Monday before hosting a three-game series against Philadelphia Phillies starting Tuesday. RHP Kyle Gibson (2-1, 3.18 ERA) starts for the Phillies. Diamondbacks has not announced a starter.
