Lady Pirates tennis borders Athens

WHEELERSBURG – It was an early revival and a close invitation to the Wheelersburg High School Girls Tennis Team on Saturday.

But the main thing is how early or even how close, host Lady Pirates won for the second time in so many matches.

This is because Wheelersburg won both doubles races and got a convincing third single win from Isabella Hamilton when the Lady Pirates reached Athens 3-2 in a non-league match.

Originally set for the first dose at 11 a.m., the hit was postponed for two hours to nine in the morning as a cause of weather conditions.

Wheelersburg now won 2-0 as the Lady Pirates made a 5-0 cut on their visit to Minford during their season and at the opening ceremony of the South Ohio Conference on Thursday.

All five matches against Athens ended in straight series as Hamilton had a decisive victory for Lady Pirates-Athens Audrey Thompson swept 6-1 and 6-0.

This broke the 2-2 draw as the Bulldogs benefited from the top two singles wins, while Wheelersburg achieved their double match.

Initially a duel, senior Maegan Jolly and junior Emily Janney defeated Athens Xan Jordan and Katie Mosher at the same 6-1 and 6-0.

In the second doubles, Wheelersburg’s Avery Lowery and Aby Jones joined forces 6-2 and 6-1 to sweep over Kylie Snider and Allison North.

In other singles, Serena Kataria of Lady Pirates pushed Rachel Strickland in both series — but still remained 6-4 and 6-3.

Athens senior Anna Chen initially swept Maria Nolan for singles 6-1 and 6-2 as Chen returns to the Division II qualifiers in singles and has reached the semi-finals last season.

During Chen’s second year season, he collaborated with then-parent Ami Brannan — and the Bulldog duo made it to the Division II State tournament.

In fact, Chen and Brannan were runners-up for Wheelersburg district champion Kaitlyn Sommer and Maddie Gill.

Lady Pirates will return to the SOC match on Tuesday — as they travel to Notre Dame for the opening season opening match.
