KALAMAZOO, MI Two years ago, Ozan Colak proved to be the best 16-year-old tennis player in the nation by finishing sixth at the USTA Boys National Championships in Kalamazoo.
On Sunday, the Okemos native repeated sixth place at Kalamazoo Colleges Stowe Stadium, this time at the 18U level, sealing his position as one of the U.S. junior tennis players.
Colak ended his tournament at the USTA Boys Nationals in 2021, reaching the consolation series final for the second year in a row, before dropping to 17th place in Kyle Kang, Fullerton, California, 6-0, 6-1.
Tournament No. 9 seeds, Colak went 7-2 in singles and opened with three consecutive wins before falling to defending 16U national champion Alex Bernard 6-2, 3-6, 3-6.
Colak recovered from the loss by winning four matches in the assists to secure a spot in the consolation final.
Ranked nations No. 6 are waiting for the class 2022 Tennis Recruiting Network Colak has spent a strong summer on the International Tennis Federation Junior Tour, including a couple of wins at Junior Wimbledon in early July.
He was one of 13 Indigenous people in Michigan to compete in the 78th round of the USTA Boys Nationals, leaving Kalamazo the only one to finish in the tournament among the top 32 performers in the 18U or 16U doubles division.
Mattawan Nathaniel Webster and William Cooksey, a native of Grosse Pointe Shores, both made it to the 32-round qualifiers in the 18U doubles tournament, but both lose to battle three-round matches to end their USTA Boys Nationals game days.
