Ohio Football Camp Day 13: Will Kacmarek

ATHENS, Ohio– The Ohio national football team ended the fall camp on Thursday morning at Peden Stadium. After training, we grabbed the freshman tight Will Kacmarek talk about how his first fall camp is going.

Since high school, Kacmarek didn’t have many opportunities to play at Division I level. The St. Louis newcomer then received an offer from Ohio and has not looked back since.

“I thought I had a really good senior season, it was during the COVID year, so it was very difficult to get scholarships and recruitments,” Kacmarek said. “Ohio contacted me and they are the only ones who believed in me. I talked to a bunch of coaches, they all love me and I love them back.”

Kacmarek knew the jump from high school to college would be huge, so he completed his body during the summer with intense workouts before arriving on campus. When the freshman reached campus, he was received by staff and teammates.

“Coach Albin, that guy is an awesome head coach, he contacted my family and he contacted me,” Kacmarek said. “I was surrounded by all these good players and all these great players, they were all well received by me.”

There are a lot of people around St. Louis ’native to learn. He said his position as a coach, Brian Metz, is the best tight coach he has ever had.

In addition, Kacmarek is one of the team’s most experienced station teams, led by “super seniors” Adam and Ryan Luehrmann, as well as redshirt junior Alec Burton.

When the first team gets reps and Kacmarek looks from the side, he stands next to his more experienced teammates who help him when he has questions.

“They always teach me every step of the way,” Kacmarek said. “If I have any questions, they’re ready to answer them for me. I feel really blessed to be around me, and I’m given all this information whenever I need it.”

Kacmarek has quickly learned that college football is no joke. Scouting team sessions, when he gets most of his repetitions, are often the most physical parts of the exercise.

When Kacmarek is with the players on the first team, he has found that one of the most important skills in his game is sophisticated technology.

“Technology is all you have at the time,” Kacmarek said. “Obviously, you have the strength and speed, but you have a huge opportunity to get from point A to point B and make those key blocks and key routes.”

As Kacmarek develops his skills in his first training camp, he is fortunate to have all the experienced players and coaches around him heal. Kacmarek and Bobcats get their first chance to show their improvement from camp at home against Syracuse 4. September.
