Joe Root believes Dawid Malan can help reinforce England’s predicament because he has experience playing in high-pressure situations.

The 33-year-old left-handed was added to the England team against the third test against India, and is expected to arrive straight at XI No. 3, with Haseeb Hameed moving to open in Emerald Headingley.

Malan has a modest average of 27.84 in 15 tests so far, but he has succeeded in white ball cricket on the international stage. He has also accused himself well of the 2017/18 Ashes series in Australia, making the century in Perth and averaging 42.55.

“Dawid would, of course, offer us a lot of experience in the top three,” Root said. “Not necessarily … in test cricket, but he’s been playing a huge amount of international cricket now and dealing with the pressure.

“He has played a lot of red ball cricket during his career and he has also been very successful. He has played in a massive league in Australia on the away team and has been leading our run there, so we know he can do great things in Test match cricket.

England vs India

Go on with life

“He comes from behind – it’s just one point in County Championship cricket, but it’s high (199 Yorkshire vs Sussex) as well as a few great points in high pressure cricket in a shorter form as well.”

While England hope the stroke line-up will be strengthened by adding Mala, they lost another seam bowler after news that Mark Wood will fail the Headingley test because of Lord’s right shoulder.

England is already without Jofra Archer, Stuart Broad, Olly Stone and Chris Woakes due to injury, and while Root admitted the situation is frustrating, especially due to the increased complication of coronavirus protocols, he has had little trouble trying to stay optimistic.

Root says he has a hard time seeing his friend and former Yorkshire teammate Azeem Rafiq offend his claim of institutional racism against the club.

“I play in England and I play Test cricket. It’s pretty easy to stay positive in this regard, I live my childhood dream,” he said.

“I also try to remind myself of it constantly when we have a weird hard day or things don’t always go well.” When I was 10, I couldn’t think of anything else I would want to do.

“Living this childhood dream is one way you can motivate yourself to meet the next challenge and the next day. I’m tragic in my cricket. I love the game, I love beating. I try to take every opportunity to do it.”

Craig Overton and Saqib Mahmood seek to replace Wood in XI in Leeds, England.

It would be a test debut for Lancashire fast bowler Mahmood, and Root has no doubt that the 24-year-old is ready to get up if he nods.

“I feel like Saqib couldn’t be in a better place to possibly play test cricket,” he added.

“You look at how he has progressed over the last couple of years in all forms. The opportunities he has taken advantage of this year since he got them have been exceptional.

“He has been a great bowler. He came out of the one-day series (against Pakistan) as probably the most experienced player and best seamstress Ben (Stokes) went under pressure.

“It just shows how far he’s come, and it’s great to see this strength in depth and his evolving as he’s been doing for a long time.”
