Cross-country skiing hopes to continue last year’s success
Shaquille Ray has spent time as an assistant coach on the Scottish Athletics team in recent years, but this year he will also coach boys ’and girls’ ski teams.
The Scots and Lady Scots both won last season and also received several runners-up finishes.
Ray said he hopes to continue with the same level of success, especially as several runners return from last year’s team.
Lady Scots returns her two best runners in junior Carson Bue and senior Bethany Matthews, while the boys return to senior Cooper Sutherland.
“It helps that some managers are automatically in the program,” Ray said. “It helps me understand their strengths and weaknesses, but I don’t overload them and make sure they’re comfortable because I don’t want to make them uncomfortable (from their exercises).”
As a track coach and former track runner, Ray said returning runners have helped him learn his usual training routines and running schedule, which also helps new runners adapt.
“It gives everyone a chance to get to know it,” Ray said. “That way, every time we start sharing weeks and sending them their workouts and things, I can build workouts for each athlete instead of the whole group because some are new and some are coming back.”
Girls golf are trying to arouse interest
In his first year of managing the Scottish golf program, head coach David Synan hopes to use this season’s interest in the program.
“I’m not just thinking about this year, but also the years to come,” Synan said. “I want to have good people together who have a high character and who work hard.”
In 1998, as a Scottish alum who also played college golf at High Point, Synan coached men’s and women’s golf programs at UNC-Pembroke for about 15 years before starting at Lady Scots.
“I started teaching at SEARCH in January and I’m teaching EC kids all over the county on adaptive bodybuilding,” Synan said. “I’ve always loved school and I love golf, so it was an easy decision.”
Lady Scots will return parent Faith McCormick from last year’s team, but will also add two newcomers.
Student Berkley Wallace and junior Kelsey Hunter will join the team this year as they move to Scotland from Marlboro Academy.
Girls tennis building for the future
Brian Patterson is the second new coach to take on the Scottish Athletics program this year. She begins her first season as the Lady Scots try to rebuild a program that was completed last year by five retirees.
“I want to create a tennis culture,” Patterson said. “I want to get people excited about it and bring a little energy.”
Patterson said it starts with involving the community in tennis and teaching children to play tennis when they are younger.
“I’ve already talked (Scotland Tennis Center) about starting a youth program for middle schoolers so we can send high school students to high school who know what tennis is,” Patterson said. “For example, kids have been playing football for 8-9 years when they start high school, but for tennis or golf, it’s the first year of playing. I want them to get through the system. “
Given the number of seniors on the team last year, there aren’t many returning players and Patterson said most of the players he’s trained to date have been new entrants.
The three returning players are juniors Laura Wlodarczak and Valeria Carranza, as well as senior Morgan Stewart.
Patterson said he hopes the school will have open doors that would spark interest in more players joining the team.
In practice, he added, they have worked mostly on basic things like ground moves and catering, as most of the newcomers are relatively new to the sport.
“Some players have been playing for a year, two years, but some have just taken the racket,” Patterson said. “Just like in teaching, not everyone is on the same level, so instead of teaching everyone the same, you share it individually. Some study handicrafts, while others complement handicrafts.
“They also take it pretty quickly,” Patterson added. “It’s been fun.”
