EAGAN, Minn. (AP) Irv Smith Jr. has become the top tight end of the Minnesota Vikings, bringing the speed and power of his enviable mix to what promises to be a more prominent role in his third season.

Smith also has bigger goals for his growing career and has a coveted place among the best players in the game. That’s where he was for more than three days this summer at a steamy training ground in Nashville, Tennessee.

The informal grassroots event was hosted by Travis Kelce, George Kittle and Greg Olsen, two of the league’s best and one recently retired standout. Smith was invited to a group of more than 40 players only for strict purposes.

“We just got together and spoke our language in a sense and we just talked about status,” Smith said. “It’s a very unique position in a sense, because you do a lot of different things on the field, and it’s fun to get all those guys to do the same things.”

Arrangements for the sequel in 2022 are already underway, and who knows where Smith will fit into the NFL’s unofficial hierarchy in a year’s time? Kelce (Kansas City), Kittle (San Francisco), and Rob Gronkowski (Tampa Bay) are widely regarded as an established elite, but a non-thriving player like Smith has plenty of room to rise and reach a higher level.

After Kyle Rudolphin left as a free agent for the New York Giants, Smith created a loophole in a system that has long been friendly to tight ends and often uses two at a time depending on the situation. Tyler Conklin also rises in the attack, and Rudolph, who was the team’s longest-running player, is now gone. Brandon Dillon and newcomers Zach Davidson and Shane Zylstra are the other tight ends currently on the list.

Smith has shown some deterrent ability during the two years he has been with the Vikings since he was prepared for the second round of Alabama. His ability to avoid line players and security measures in people-to-people coverage, either from a traditional endpoint, divided widely or even from the backfield, offers a considerable amount of growth potential, often targeted by quarterback Kirk Cousins.

“He looked explosive. For us, it’s about winning the team, not so much about how many yards or how many catches he gets, but he’s done a really good job,” coach Mike Zimmer said.

Smith, the son of a former New Orleans tight-headed senior Irv Smith, just turned 23 weeks ago. He has 676 yards and seven goals in two NFL seasons.

“I’ve definitely come a long way, just looking back and pondering. I do a lot for myself, but I also want to look ahead. I try to stay where my feet are, ”Smith said. “When I look back and think about what I’ve done in my career so far, it’s been good, but I want to be great and leave a legacy.”
