Sathiyan reaches the finals of the Czech International Open
After an early loss to the quarterfinals of the WTT Contender in Budapest, the victory must have become a major moral booster for Sathiyan.
The 28-year-old, No. 39 in the world, was at his best throughout the finals. His backhand block, hand and backhand counters during long rallies, and side services provided him with a breakthrough when he needed it most.
Yevhen, the fourth seed, with a world ranking of 111, started in a lukewarm way, but got into a career pretty quickly with his hard front-row top-rotating drives. In fact, the 36-year-old had four game points in the fourth game, but Sathiyan saved them all.
Sathiyan and Manika Batra won the mixed stage title at the WTT competition in Budapest last week.
Sathiyan said that while it is a WTT feeder series, winning the finale with overwhelming ease because the seed under pressure was proud of him. “After winning the second title (ITTF Challenge) in Spain in 2017, this is special because it comes after four long years. Plus, I liked the way I played and controlled. I could see the old instinctive Sathiyan,” he said. Sportstar.
Sathiyan said the International Table Tennis Federation needs to consider freezing world ranking points and come up with a relationship to add old ranking points (before the emergence of world table tennis) with new points. “This is how we progress and motivate players who have done well,” he said.
