Differences and northwestern football completely strange

In 2020, I had an idea. Stupid, just a great-if-you-are-college-football-sicko idea, but an idea nonetheless.

When you look at Bill Connellys SP + rankings on ESPN (widely regarded as the best measure of a single team in the public sector of college football), amazed me at how different the Northwest two units were in their rankings.

The cats started the opening race vs. Maryland and finished sixth in the entire FBS in Defensive SP +, but were still only ranked 54th because they were weighted with a crime that ranked 117th in the same yardstick.

The gap closed slightly towards the end of the season as NU rose to third and 93rd defensive and offensive SP +. pandemic changed year.

However, it was also widely agreed that Northwestern did this largely in spite of its crime and not because of it, and it is this dissonance that fascinates me year after year. The Northwest is good and saves the doomsday scenario-type season (see: 2019) ensured basic skills under Pat Fitzgerald, but they do so clearly for the sake of one team unit, and the other half is, on average, below a consistent foundation. It should be impossible to get into the Top 10 team in the AP poll as a crime worse than some other 92 sports in the same sport, but here are the cats.

In that aforementioned song I wrote in the summer of 2020, I touched on my difference values, where I simply reduced the basics to find the differences between the offensive and defensive SP + ratings of all 130 teams. Northwestern finished second in the entire college football landscape last season as their 111th place finish was the best only in the state of San Diego, which reached 112. Both suffered similar fates as SDSU was coming 11th this week in stellar defense, but a deadweight violation, which ranked 123rd in SP +.

As shocking as it is, the Aztecs have done it again. They have won cats from seasonal advance differences in crowns by the smallest margin and widened their gap from 112 to 114, while Northwestern will move to 2021 with the same difference as last year 111.

I want to challenge a real SDSU Aztec mascot to boxing at this point, it’s frustrating.

In fact, the Northwesterns attack tried to do its best by sliding further down the SP + rankings down 123. Nationally in 12th place, while SDSU will participate in the 8th overall in the Defensive SP + tournament for the upcoming season.

Absolutely shocking.

The fact remains, however, that both of these schools are clearly above the others (given that it is not inherently good to be high on this list). State of Washington start the season third despite the fact that there is only an 88-point difference between attack and defense, making them 23 points after Northwestern. In all, only 25 teams out of 130 cover the 50-point mark, and a large proportion of them are Power Five teams.

Most college football teams are logical and either consistently good (Alabama), consistently mediocre (Wake Forest) or constantly scary (New Mexico State) in all parts of his team. Northwest football is thus the opposite of logic.

Within your own conference, it’s not even close. State of Michigan and Purdue are the only schools that come close to cat skill, with scores of 75 and 60.

(Both NU and MSU, with much below average offense and quality defenses, have a good reminder to prepare for the 11-8 rock battle next Friday).

After all, there is no big, wide takeaway to all of this. Northwest Pat Fitzgerald has never had an offensive Dynamo, and yet it is rare for his team to perform below expectations throughout the season.

It’s more than a fun exercise for all of us sick to remind us of what we looked at both this year and the years to come, the Bonkers team, which is top notch on the one hand and in poor condition on the other, but still eventually they get bigger than the sum of their parts.

There’s Northwest football and then logical results to reality. The two have never mixed and will probably never mix. Bless us all.
