UMass cuts at Maine OT

Talk about some of the dramas at the beginning of the season.

After giving up the 2-0 lead and five minutes left, the UMass field hockey team responded with a match on Sunday.

Steph Gottwals buried the penalty area for 4 minutes, 19 seconds into overtime, elevating the one-minute women to victory 3-2 against Fame in a non-conference race at Gladchuk Field in Amherst.

UMass improved to 2-0 for the first time since 2017. The club will next host Vermont on Friday.

When Maine did twice in the last five minutes to force an extra session, UMass earned four consecutive penalty corners in OT. Maine goalkeeper Mia Bortley blocked several defensive efforts in her last attempt, but the Gottwals ended when she sent the ball high into the cage.

UMass goalkeeper Marlise van Tonder blocked four times.

Gottwals also scored the first goal of the match in the opening period, during the second penalty corner, and Georgie McTearmade scored 2-0 at the end of the third quarter.

Women’s Soccer Results 2-1

Lauren Smida created the winning goal for the match early in the second half and buried Chandler Pedolzky’s entry to UMass’s victory at Boston University on Sunday night 2-1.

At the end 1-0, UMass Bella played Emily McCormack ahead 34 minutes into the match.

Megan Olszewski stopped eight shots for Minutewomen in their first start of the season.

Trainer selected from NLL Draft

Former UMass men’s lacrosse midfielder Jeff Trainor was selected for the San Diego Seals Saturday night in the fifth round of the National Lacrosse League (NLL) Entry Draft.

Trainor, who is the overall selection for the draft 64, became the midfielder with the most points in program history in 2021, when he overtook Norm Smith (140 points; 1976-79). Billerica’s descent appeared in 62 matches and 35 started the first row in midfield during his career. He scored 147 points with 85 goals and 62 assists.

Trainor’s 147 points placed him exactly 16th on the UMass scoring list with Tom Malonen (1969-70), while his 85 goals are the 21st most in the team’s history and his 62nd entry point 16th.
