CHICAGO – After the expulsion, Chicago Cubs bench coach Andy Green wondered how he could pass his fine to manager David Ross or baseball operation leader Jed Hoyer.
Most likely, however, it will remain with me, said the true, grinning Green said.
Green took over as Manager after Ross and Hoyer got a positive COVID-19 test, but were thrown out in the sixth set of a 6-5 victory in Chicago from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday.
Michael Hermosillo took home and drove in three innings, leading to Cubs ’fourth win. Frank Schwindel also joined, and Ian Happ got three more hits on a wet afternoon at Wrigley Field.
A spokesman for the group said Ross and Hoyer feel very isolated. Both are vaccinated.
Green, who is second through at work, leads the team when Ross is away. But Green was deleted written by Tom Hallion when he went second, hoping to convince the judges to check Kevin Newmans ’slide on a possible doubles.
Green wasn’t sure who was leading the team when he was thrown out. He guessed that field coach Tommy Hottovy.
I didn’t find out. … At this point, your guess is as good as mine, he said.
Anthony Alford hit two long trips home last place to Pittsburgh, who dropped their fourth game in a row. Hoy Park also went deep.
Eventually, I’m going to get hot, ”Alford said. The biggest thing is just the swing decision and the fact that the fields in the zone are skipped.
The pirates were left 5-0 after four innings, but Alford reached a three-stage sixth, tying a two-stage Homer, a massive drive to the green roof in the middle, chasing Alec Mills. Alford will have four homes this year and seven in his career since his first multi-home game.
These guys are really strong, Pirates manager Derek Shelton said. When he hits it, it goes a long way. I think comfort and self-confidence play a part in this.
Schwindel regained the Cubs lead on Shelby Miller’s (0-1) 3-0 pitch in the lower half of one inning. Schwindel also appeared in another Hermosillo.
Trevor Megill (1-0), Codi Heuer and Rowan Wick together made 3 1/3 unbeaten innings after Mills left. Megill got four innings from her first big league win, and Rowan Wick hit the side in her ninth second fight.
Megill had to change gloves before the start of the seventh.
I think its color was too close to white for the crew, Green said. There is some room for maneuver in the rules.
Hermosillo helped Chicago get off to a fast start with a two-story single with two sets in the second. He led in the fourth with him third home, drive left in the middle against Steven Brault.
Happ was singled out third, doubled to fifth and re-singled to seventh. The clutch striker hits .342 (25 73) in his last 20 games and raises his average to 0.208 after the start of the rough season.
