Late Goal Lifts No. 18 ODU over No. 24 JMU in Harrisonburg, 3-2

HARRISONBURG, Va. Delphine Younger modified with a penalty shot of 2:54 left in the regulation to elevate the 18th-place nationally-ranked Old Dominion field ahead of hockey team (2-1) 24 James Madison (2-1) on Friday night at the 3-2 JMU Field Hockey Complex.

“We are really pleased with our team’s performance tonight,” said the ODU assistant coach Natalie Holder. “We took a big step in our game and we had great personal accomplishments. JMU is always a hard team to play with; they are well trained and very aggressive. So coming and beating them at home is a strong statement for us.
We’re excited about where we’re with this group, and every week we find ways to improve. “

The Dukes jumped to a 1-0 lead at 6:08 in the first quarter as dominant CAA player of the year Eveline Zwager defeated her third goal of the season.

Five minutes from the second frame, ODU’s Marlon de Bruijne leveled the corner of the match from the corner Meghan Smart, tapped by de Bruijne Alice Demars.

Old Dominion had advantages over shots (5-2) and corners (3-0) in the first half.

Evelyn Murray took the Monarchs to a 2-1 lead after six minutes as he distracted a few JMU defenders and found the net behind the right wing.

Tori Carawan leveled the match for James Madison 2-2, five minutes in the fourth quarter.

When the match was in the fourth quarter, Le Jeune blew the winning goal of the match past the JMU goalkeeper from the penalty spot. The goal was Le Jeune’s second goal in so many games.

For the match Cam MacGillivray he was awarded five fights in goals to the rulers. ODU surpassed James Madison in match 11-8 and took six matches from eight corners.

Old Dominion will return to operations on Friday, Sept. 10 at 5 p.m., when the rulers welcome Longwood to the LR Hill Sports Complex.
