The Ingersoll defender for the Canadian women’s national team heard from family, friends, old classmates, former teammates, former teachers and even some of his father’s oldtimer hockey friends after winning gold at the World Cup in Calgary last week.

I felt a lot of love from Ingersoll and Woodstock, Shelton said Friday from Columbus, OH. Im overwhelmed by all the support andPat on the back from my hometown. I didn’t think a lot of people watched, and it feels good that the community you grew up with is behind you.

The 23-year-old played in every game in his first international tournament in Canada. It was a step up from his studies with Clarkson, where Shelton starred in four years and was captain from 2019-20.

You play with the best of the world with the best of the best, and doing with this group is amazing, he said. It’s been a while since they’ve climbed to the top, and being a part of it is very exciting, and I’m honored to be a part of the group that moved hockey to the Canadian tide.

Canada won the 11th gold medal at the World Championships 7-0 and the first after 2012. Marie-Philip Poulin scored a golden goal 7:22 against extra time against the United States. His shots went under the crossbar and bounced out of the video check to confirm what the Canadian players knew.

We all thought it was on the bench, Shelton said. We got up and didn’t hear a whistle. (Poulin) came back to the bench and said it was inside.

A few of us younger girls stood together, and then we heard a buzzer and started throwing our gloves.

Shelton ended the tournament with a goal and two assists. The gloved side of his wrist, as he crept into the slot, won the Canadas 5-1 victory over Russia in the second preliminary game.

It also came before his parents, Warren and Cathy, who made the trip west and were part of a limited audience that was allowed into the arena.

It was awesome, he said. I like to look up standing and see a familiar face. While I can’t touch them, we have a lot of hand signs we give each other and we know what that means.

Shelton held the puck and will have to show it on a new shelf with other hockey memorials, the first of many memories with the national team.

You go there and it’s another hockey, he said. Being with everyone was pretty exciting throughout the tournament.

These girls made it easy to play my own game. I think it was also easy because we were always on the same page with the team, we were all very connected and together.

The group will once again be together for more than two months starting next week when they return to Calgary to prepare for the Beijing Winter Olympics in 2021. Team Canada will play competing series with the United States and compete on a couple of international trips during training.

Shelton should know by the end of the year if he is part of the group leaving for China.

At the World Championships, I stepped up my game and put myself in a good place to make this team, he said. If I put pressure on myself and work on the things they want me to do, and I am a resource and do the work they want me to do, I get myself in a good place.
