GENEVA, NY The Ithaca College women’s tennis team opened its season on Labor Day weekend and competed in the Mary Hosking Invitational, which was hosted at William Smith College. The Bombers put together a number of excellent efforts in the singles competition, and it was clear that several pairs will be a force in this season’s singles.
The emphasis on action on the A single flight was Taylor Crain who beat SUNY Geneseon Natalia Krol during Saturday 8-5. He went on to the quarterfinals where he battled Jack Drozd from RIT, who beat Crain 5-2. On flight B. Zoe Davis showed a great performance as he moved into Sunday’s semi-final round after a decisive 8-5 win in the quarter-finals over Meredith Macey. In the semifinals, he fell to the final winner of the flight (8-0) Staphanie Pratt from Hamilton College.
Daniella Wisniewski also appeared in the quarterfinals for the bombers when he won the opening round draw 8-0 and then defeated Hamilton’s Ally Turtledove back and forth with an 8-6 decision. He hung tight with another Hamilton opponent in the semifinals, but won 8-6 against Lorelei Glidden.
At the comfort flight of flight A. Lauren Rodriguez ran all the way to the finals and collected two straight wins to reach the finals against Lauren Holtzman. Hamilton’s junior defeated Rodriguez with an 8-2 decision.
In a duel, a duo Eliana Chelnick and Zoe Davis almost made it to the semifinals, but in their semi-final match against Maggie Bonomo and Audreyanna Camacho, they were forced into an additional series where they were improved to 8-7 (7-1). Kayla Shenk and Lauren Rodriguez also teamed up with Ithaca and did competition work to win the University of Rochester tandem with the decision of Stephanie Kim and Olivia Waysack 8-7 (8-6).
Ithaca is scheduled to return to operations on Saturday, September 18, when the bombers will compete on the first day of the ITA Northeast Region Championship.
