NEW YORK (Reuters) Gaming was suspended for a moment on courts outside Flushing Meadows on Sunday minutes after the fourth round of the U.S. Open when Billie Jean King rained light on the National Tennis Center.
Two doubles matches, one in court 17 and one in the stands, had just begun when tournament authorities suspended operations and most of the fans left the stands. The disturbance was short and the players returned to the pitch after less than 45 minutes.
At Louis Armstrong Stadium, 11th seed Diego Schwartzman and qualifier Botic van de Zandschulp continued their match under the retractable roof.
The interruption was far from the weather disruption of recent weeks as the remnants of a tropical storm in the East tore through five neighborhoods, causing record flooding around the city and sending rain through Louis Armstrong Stadium.
