Field of hockey closed No. 3 in Iowa – The Daily Free Press

In a rare match with the University of Iowa, the Boston University field hockey closed 4-0 on Sunday afternoon in Boston. For the first time in more than a decade, the Terriers (2-2) dropped 1-9 all the time compared to the Hawkeyes (4-0).

Iowa started the No. 3 Division 1 field hockey team this season and was New Balance Field’s highest visiting team since 2017, when Duke (then number 2) faced the Terriers at home. Head coach Sally Starr said that even though the goals went away from us, the team put in a lot of effort on Sunday.

Terriers don’t back down to big dogs, Starr said. We really got the mindset that we had a chance to do something special today. Just grow and learn from this.

The Terriers held up against the Hawkeyes, but were ultimately unable to build momentum and break up three shots during the game. Continuing student striker Miya Denison shot the BUs in the first minute of the game, but Iowa senior goalkeeper Grace McGuire knocked it down to save. BU only made a new shot in the third set.

Iowa had a great shot advantage, collecting a total of 19. Four different Hawkeye players scored, but the Terriers managed to cool fifth-year striker and midfielder Maddy Murphy, the ten offensive players of the week. After three consecutive games hot with at least one goal or pass, Murphy failed in either of the five shots on Sunday.

Junior Caroline Kelly started BU in the cage and kept the game close in the first half. His only mistake was a goal by Hawkeye senior midfielder and defender Lokke Stribos around the corner. Kelly and sophomore Kate Thomason did 10 fights together. Kelly earned six of them, including star diving in the 23rd minute.

Caroline Kelly was certainly excellent, Starr said. I have to look at the paints made, I’m not quite sure what happened to those paints. Probably a combination of everything that gives them too many opportunities.

Corners played a big role in Sunday’s game. Iowa played eight and was able to take advantage of opportunities where two of Hawkeyes ’four goals came to the corners. Starr said the team is considering this side of the game.

We need to look at how they earned the corners, Starr said. Did they really deserve it or did we do something careless?

BU on the other hand were looking full of confidence as they came running out onto the pitch. Senior midfield player Rebecca Janes gave a great pass to junior Ellie McIntyre who shot the ball into the net. The shot bent from the left and left BU unpainted.

It’s a game of swinging speed, Starr said, and I just think we rode the waves pretty well.

The Terriers expect to return to victories at home against Lowell University in Massachusetts on Friday at 6 p.m., before they start the road game, starting at 1 p.m., with a match against rival Boston College at 12 p.m. September.
