Local Cricket: The big day at Birkenhead Park brings the promise of a Premier Division honeymoon

They had to share a spotlight with the wedding reception and their locker room with the rugby team – but Division 1 hope for promotion Birkenhead Park must keep all points to themselves Liverpool on saturday.

The hosts were warmly welcomed in more than one way, and they stopped when 92 guests arrived, and then failed to crash the party when visitors won the victory at the nine-door, classic-singing wedding singer.

Like Bachhav, Hird demanded five sacrifices – his holding was convenient and his conversation was relentless.

When we got to the top, I think we just managed to stifle them, said Park skipper Tom Foster.

We were really good – from the first ball we were in it.

Alex bowled really well, and Satyajeet was just like all season.

Stes had serious injuries. This is the first year he has had since 2018 and he is top notch – beating his leg, two big prey from Satyajeet, his energy is all you want.

If Parks bowlers had made the racket awkward to hit, their strokes made it easy.

Michael Barnes showed the way with a brisk back stroke and a delicious cut from Kelly; Bachhav took full advantage when Clubbe crossed at the other end. One cover plate evoked the wild joy of the wedding guests – the embarrassment of the bride and groom, it overshadowed their large entrance, which took place at exactly the same time.

When Barnes hit one shot too many for Clein and chose to dive Naylor from the deep middle bay, the chase was broken; Alex Harris made the last 27 of 29 runs to get a convincing win and leave his team in a strong position in Division One.

Foster added: The other teams out there are good teams, and they keep winning, so we just have to do what we have to do – we still get 25 points.

For Kelly, who was first selected for the bat, it was a disciplined afternoon as the inconsistent mid-table season draws to a close.

We knew they were the offensive side, and they came up against us on the yacht, he said. We thought maybe we could try to win the game this way.

But there are no two ways to do that – we didn’t give a good account with a racket or a ball.

This has just been a very bad day at the office – the season as a whole has been good. Experienced young team, but talents on the sidelines.

Rainford stay hot on the Parks heel for a third thanks to a 29-fold win Northop Hall. William Threlkeld, brother of Manchester Originals and NW Thunder goalkeeper Ellie, scored the best with 61 on hosts 164; skipper John Dotters 5/54 did the rest.

Newton-le-Willows is one and a half feet in the Premier Division after a nice win Fleetwood Hesketh. Afaq Ali Sartajs 6/39 ran through the hosts with 105 before Ben Walkdens 71 controlled eight wicket wins on his side.

St Helens Town is the second division team next year after the home win Colwyn Bay. Ross Hudson hit 87 * and Ryan Westwell 62 to help the Welsh side accumulate 225/5; the hosts never seemed to get close when they fell to 4/3, and the next collapse from 68/5 to 74 covered their fate.

Old Xaverians they still have a chance to save themselves after 67 wins Highfield, whose early promotional challenge now seems a long way from the past. Xavs Shaun Haigh hit 51 to help them recover from 72/6 to 159; captain Mark Doyles 5/16 summed up the victory.
