The Nighthawk national football team returns as the winner

In their first traditional game in two seasons, the Newtown High Schools national football team continued where it left off.

Nighthawks won a visiting Pomperaug from Southbury at 42-19 Blue & Gold Stadium on September 10th. This was the first game on the new grass and Newtowns ’first 11/11 race since taking the 2019 Class LL State Championship. Last season changed significantly due to the coronavirus, and the teams played 7 7 touch football.

Newtown got into a fight for two plus quarters. Newtown led 21-17 at halftime and retreated behind a meager defense and perhaps a particularly intensified attack and special teams with turnover and penalty issues in the first half.

After Andrew Jacobs opened the scoring with a two-yard goal attack, the Panthers responded with a blocked field goal attempt that was returned to TD. The Hawks returned to the lead when quarterback Dylan Magazu rushed 32 yards to paydert and broke several tackles along the way. It was 14-7 after the NHS quarter.

In the second quarter, the abduction of Pomperaug blocked Newtown’s position, and the roughness of the pass penalty in the third set was held by the Panthers and led to a tie in the game.

Colin Breslins ’long rush set Caleb Smiths’ starting point, a three-yard TD rush, with only 1:42 left in the second quarter.

Newtown coughed the ball back to punt less than halfway. This led to Pomperaug’s 32-yard field goal over time.

Everything was Nighthawks in the second half. After a small initial penalty problem, Newtown rushed down the half-time gate.

Mark Sokk cut the Pomperaug receiver’s jumped feed and ran it back more than 50 yards to the TD and 28-17 NHS lead in less than six minutes in the third inning.

After the defense, the Hawks increased their lead. Magazus long carry set their nine-yard contact angle for Cam Ward as third and finish. The situation was 35-17 after three.

For the fourth time, JJ Haddick limited scoring with a six-yard touch.

Newtown will be visiting New Milford on Friday, September 17 at 7 p.m.
