SMSU TENNIS: Mustangs deserve two wins on Saturday in River Falls News, sports, jobs

RIVER FALLS, the Wis.-Southwest Minnesota State Women’s Tennis Team opened the fall season on Saturday to earn a couple of wins from out-of-conference NCAA Division III schools on Ramer Field tennis courts on the Wisconsin-River Falls campus.

SMSU opened the day with a 9-0 win over UW-River Falls and a 5-4 win over St. Ben’s.

SMSU broke the victory over UWRF in five of the six singles matches that were won in straight series. Courtenay Leonard won 6-2, 6-1 in 1st place, Cora Delich won 6-1, 6-1 with No. 2, while Maja Louisa Harck took 6-1, 6-0. 3. Abbey Agra achieved a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-0) victory in 4th place, while Daniela Poulakidas and Marisol Palacio earned direct wins in 5th and 6th place.

In the doubles, Leonard and Harck won 8-1 with No. 1, Roz Oye and Delick won 8-2 in 2nd place, while Agra and Poulakidas won the hard fight 8-6. 3.

The second match of the day at SMSU was much tighter against St. Ben’s. Leonard earned a point for the Mustang 6-3, 6-4 with a No. 1 win, and Harck also earned a No. 2 straight series win with a score of 6-4, 6-1. Palacio earned a second single point to SMSU with a 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (10-5) win in 6th place. Delich Poulakidas each defeated in three sets, while Agra lost in straight sets.

SMSU won two of three doubles matches. Leonard and Harck won the tight 8-7 match No. 1, while Oye and Delich secured an 8-2 win in 2nd place. Palacio and Skylar Mendro lost 3rd place by 8-2.

The state of southwest Minnesota will return to play 18-19. September at the Gustavus invitation in St. Petersburg.
