LAHORE: Newly elected Pakistani cricket board chairman Ramiz Raja said on Monday that continuing bilateral mandates with India is “impossible right now,” and he is not in a “hurry” to do so either, as his focus is currently exclusively on the country’s home circle.
The 59-year-old, who officially took office on Monday after a unanimous election, also admitted that chairing the PCB is one of the most difficult tasks for cricket.
“This is a very big challenge, and many squares had to be selected before the Prime Minister (Imran Khan) decided to give me this difficult job,” he said at a press conference here.

Asked about the possibility of reviving bilateral series between Pakistan and India, Raja said: “Impossible right now …”
“… because the sports model has ruined politics and right now it’s the status quo, and we’re not in a hurry on this because we need to focus on domestic and local cricket,” he added.
He also expressed his dissatisfaction with the development of the lack of a decision-making system in the upcoming Pakistan-New Zealand White Ball Series in Rawalpindi and Lahore.
“Yes, there is no doubt that this DRS issue reflects the mess and I am going to look into this,” he said.
The border expressed its reservations about the level of coaching in the country and said there is an urgent need to improve the country’s local infrastructure.
When asked if he would allow board CEO Wasim Khan to continue, Raja made it clear that he would not discuss the body’s internal affairs in public.
However, he argued that if there was proper accountability, 90 percent of staff would deserve a resignation from the board.

“It’s a show stop, and when I met the players on the Pakistani team, I told them I want to turn the tables this time and the team needs to be 100% operational for the match and doing well,” he said.
The new chairman of the PCB also said he wants the national team to play fearless cricket.
– We have to be prepared to face problems and also to lose matches, but I have told the players that they should not worry that they are safe from their place on the team and play fearless cricket.
“I know we face more failures than successes when we go down this path, but we have to do it if we want to become relevant in the world of cricket. Because this is a process and we also need to change the way players think.”
Raja is Pakistan’s 18th Test and 12th ODI Captain, and he played 255 international matches in which he made 8,674 runs between 1984-1997.
He previously served as CEO of PCB from 2003-2004 and represented Pakistan on the ICC CEO Committee and currently sits on the MCC World Cricket Committee.
Since retiring, he has been a successful broadcaster.
