Evaluate Maryland football rankings after Howard’s victory

Maryland football did business against Howard in College Park.

Head coach Michael Locksleys energized the team in the fight with Bison at home and walked away with a dominant 62-0 win to improve the 2021 2-0.

Maryland has now taken over West Virginia and Howard to start the season, and has a favorable match with Illinois and Kent State on deck looking at the upcoming schedule.

It’s certainly hard to find flaws in the overall Marylands game, which won a 62-point win where it didn’t give Howard a single point, but now it’s time to take a close look at each location group to see how they did in the second week of the season.

Defender

Built on a 332-yard, three-touch show to a 30-24 victory over West Virginia on Sept. 4, junior quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa continued to impress Howard, even though Bison was a much weaker opponent than mountaineers. It couldn’t have been much better for Tagovailo, who played until the early stages of the third quarter. He scored 22 and 27, good enough for 81.5% pass and threw three goals.

And once again, the encouraging trend that can be seen in Tagovailo is the increase in his turnover margin. The quarterback starting in Marylands for the second consecutive week made no turnover, which he struggled with last season (seven games in four games in 2020). Overall, Tagovailo was again a very positive week, and a match with Illinois is coming.

It’s also worth mentioning that senior Reece Udinski got some playing time along with younger Eric Najarian, but Udinski got second most against quarterback Bison. Udinski had only five passes, but he combined them all for a total of 73 yards and a touch.

Run back

There were a considerable number of Maryland stations that began in the Howards area after Terps ’defense pushed Bison deep into his own head on several occasions. Such a head start on each offensive station benefited the programs that were running because the game’s script flowed straight into the backfield popularity and it showed.

Maryland ended up with a whopping 49 attacks compared to just 32 passes at night. It was a more pleasant way of thinking in a national match, as six different mates on the Terps list got at least three positions. Redshirt senior Tayon Fleet-Davis took his starting role for the second consecutive week and took eight moves to a team-high 66 yards (8.3 yards per position).

But when the game got out of hand early, Terps got to show off his generous running depth. Freshmen running Roman Hemby, Antwain Littleton II, Colby McDonald all got in touch and took every opportunity. Hemby and McDonald made both first collegial contacts, while Littleton produced 29 yards in eight innings. The offensive force handled most of the offensive work against Howard, and Bison simply found no way to stop anyone.

Wide receiver

It was just another day at the office in Marylands with numerous talented playgrounds. Right at the top, parents Dontay Demus Jr. and sophomore Rakim Jarrett made another strong performance against Howard after helping Maryland win the opening week. Demus Jr. has established itself as one of Big Ten’s best wide receivers after collecting six prey for the game’s high 128 yards and one touch, and a long reception of 42 yards. He now sits at the top of the Big Ten yards per match, averaging 130.5 in six receptions per race.

Jarrett is another deadly weapon in Maryland, and he also quietly had another solid game. The sophomore finished second on the team with 67 yards received and one touch. Jarrett is seventh in the Big Ten when he has scored yards per match with an average of 94.5.

Among Maryland’s wide receivers, there weren’t many mistakes against Howard, and it was another successful accomplishment for the Tagovailoas weapons.

Close finish

Maryland had two tight heads on Saturday, senior starter Chigoziem Okonkwo and sophomore Corey Dyches. Okonkwo got his second straight start, and while he didn’t have the most impressive stat line, he did enough to help spread the Marylands attack to the red zone. He grabbed a two-yard pass in the terminal area from Tagovailo, who was the only catch in his game, to give the terps a third touch at night. This makes Okonkwo two goals in two games, and if he can become a consistent threat to the red zone, the Marylands attack will certainly become even more dangerous than it is.

Dyches also got the first catch of the season when the beginners showed up. He took three prey with three goals at 30 yards and showed his agility with a 19-yard win.

There wasn’t much more to do with the programs because the touch on tight end groups should be seen as a weekly success as the teams ’overwhelming goals go massively.

Offensive line

The Marylands offensive line has quietly been one of the most powerful places on the program during the first two games of the season. Terps ’lead five followed his strong performance against mountaineers with another great performance, this time against Bison. The offensive line only conceded one sack throughout the game as Tagovailoa tried hard to get rid of the ball quickly while he was in his pocket. But passport protection aside, the offensive line helped the running game, which made a big difference when Howard came into town. As a team, Maryland had an average of 4.6 yards per strain for a total of 49 companies. It was a steep game for the Terps as a whole, and they were able to retreat because the country game was consistent.

Line of defense

Terps ’line of defense did a great job limiting Bisons’ game play. Howard had a total of 19 rush companies for 66 yards, averaging only 3.5 yards per stump. The Bison found no room of any kind against the Maryland Defense Front.

Junior Greg Rose, senior Ami Finau, senior Lawtez Rogers and graduate student Sam Okuayinonu took the lead roles on the defensive line here. The biggest impact was with Okuayinonu, who made two fights (both alone) and one sack. It was a game where the line of defense just had to be in place, and it did just that against Howard.

Linebacker

Like the beginners on the offensive side of the ball, the Marylands liners varied throughout the game and there was a reasonably large number of players on the field in the second half. Despite the fact that we played backups for a long time, the line builders were a big reason why Howard struggled in the third downhill. Bison had 11 third sub-attempts and failed to change any of the games.

Fuchsia Branden Jennings had a high four singles and one loss to the team, while red-breasted secondary Deshawn Holt, junior Ahmad McCullough and co-student Osito Smith each had three hits. Once again, this was another position that didn’t make many mistakes, if any, and Howard couldn’t control the point.

Secondary

When a program wins by 62 points and gives up only 80 yards, it is difficult to find secondary errors. Howard threw three defenders during the game, and they combined 12/30 passes with 80 yards and one abduction. At least it was a dominant show from the defenders of the teams. Maryland had the opportunity to show its depth at the defensive end, and as a result, many players took replays secondarily.

Freshman Dante Trader and secondary Tarheeb Still led the way, a total of four and three oppositions. One of Maryland’s defensive points during the opening week, senior Jakorian Bennett, was beaten with an abduction and feed gap. Senior Kenny Bennett also shared his own passport. It was a flawless day for the secondary and Howard didn’t respond to Terps ’defenders.

Special teams

Maryland special teams get an average grade for the week just because they didn’t get a chance to make a big impact on Howard. Terps threw just twice, averaging 36 yards per punt, and tried a total of three field goals. Senior striker Joseph Petrino went 1: 2 to the field goals, hit 38 and missed 45 yards. Redshirt freshman Harrison Beattie even got a shot at the field goal unit and knocked the company 34 yards out in the fourth quarter.
