Lottery funding helps inspire a new generation of table tennis enthusiasts

The change in the distribution of CI Lottery proceeds means that 50% of the proceeds will go to local charities and good causes through the Jersey Charity and 50% to the arts, culture, heritage, sport and science sectors through the Jersey Community Foundation. This change in the way lottery funds are distributed will allow more organizations to apply for funding.

One organization that received a grant for 4,725 was the Jersey Table Tennis Association, which uses the funds to teach post-school coaching to table tennis players starting this month.

These exercises provide table tennis coaching 5 days a week on time, with each session lasting 90 minutes and led by a fully trained and experienced coach. Sessions will be held from 16:00 until 17:30 at the Geoff Reed Table Tennis Center on St Clement’s FB courts and will be available to both beginners and healers. Keen players are then encouraged to become junior members of the association and possibly future island, table and Olympic winners!

Paul Routier, President of the Jersey Table Tennis Association, said: In 2020, we organized a very successful short School to Sport course with Jersey Sport and Plat Douet School with the help of volunteers. The popularity of this program helped us realize that there was an opportunity to participate with the children after school and get them motivated and interested in table tennis. The funds provided by the Jersey Community Foundation are used by appropriate coaches to help the children attending these sessions improve their play and are an invaluable support to our association. We hope that the additional training will not only help us develop future successful athletes, but will also provide a fun and safe environment for children in Jersey where they can learn to play at any level.

The next application deadline is October 4, and we are currently accepting online applications, so I encourage other organizations to contact us to find out if they can also benefit from the grants available.
