Posts Kohli resigns as India’s T20I captain after the World Cup

The Indian Cricket Control Board (BCCI) announced on Thursday that Virat Kohli has decided to resign as captain of the T20I team after the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, after 2021.

Mr. Kohli will continue to be eligible after the ICC event in T20 format in 2021, hosted by BCCI in the United Arab Emirates and Oman.

BCCI President Sourav Ganguly said: “The posts have been a real asset to Indian cricket and have led skillfully. He is one of the most successful captains in all forms. The decision has been made considering the future roadmap. We thank Virati for his excellent performance as T20I captain. that he will continue to score in India.

Honorary Secretary Jay Shah said: “We have a clear roadmap for the Indian team. Given the workload and the smooth transition, Virat Kohli has decided to resign as T20I captain after the upcoming World Cup. I have discussed with Virat and the management team over the past six months and the decision has been considered.

Indian team captain Virat Kohli said: I have been fortunate to represent India, but also to lead the Indian cricket team to the best of my ability. I thank everyone who has supported me on my journey as captain of the Indian cricket team. I couldn’t have done it without them – the boys, the support staff, the selection board, the coaches and every Indian who prayed for our victory. Understanding the workload is very important, and given my huge workload over the last 8-9 years, having played all three formats and regularly captained for the last 5-6 years, I feel I need to give myself space to be fully prepared to lead the Indian team in the Test and ODI in cricket. I have given my all to the team during the T20 captain and I will continue to do so in front of the T20 as a batsman ahead. Of course, making this decision took a lot of time. After much thought and discussion with my loved ones, Ravi bhai and also Rohit, who have been an integral part of the management team, I have decided to give up the T20 captain after this T20 race in the UAE and Oman in October. I have also spoken to Secretary Jay Shah and BCCI President Sourav Ganguly and all the elect. I continue to serve Indian cricket and Indian teams to the best of my ability.

BCCI
