There are many reasons why a recruited student-athlete chooses a particular school.
Coach, fan base and school traditions are popular reasons.
But goalkeeper Lucas Szyszka of the Chicago suburb of Westmont, Illinois, was given a unique reason to verbally commit to participating in the University of Maine with a hockey grant.
I love seafood, said 17-year-old Szyszka, pronounced Siska in English and Sheeshka in Polish.
Szyszka, who currently plays for the U.S. Hockey Association’s Des Moines Buccaneers, said he found during his visit to Maine that lobster rolls are much cheaper and much tastier than in Chicago.
Six-foot, 185-pound Szyszka had played in the Premier Tier Chicago Mission AAA hockey program for 13-year-olds and under-16s in the 16-year-old age group before joining Buccaneers this season.
He is likely to come to UMaine in the fall of 2023, though that may change.
Seafood is not the only thing that attracted Szyszka to UMaine.
Des Moines ’fan base is wild, but I heard it’s even more sprawling in Maine, he said.
And Maine has a long tradition of great goalkeepers, and I want to be the next big one, he said.
UMaine has placed 11 goalkeepers in the National Hockey League, including triple Vezina Trophy (best goalkeeper) finalist Ben Bishop, longtime Detroit Red Wings goalkeeper and 246 match winner Jimmy Howard, Garth Snow, Mike Dunham, current Boston Bruins goalkeeper. Jeremy Swayman and UMaine goalkeeper coach Alfie Michaud.
I also liked the coaches, Szyszka said. There was so much good in reputation.
Jeff Hall, Des Moines goalkeeper coach, said his first impressions of Szyszka are positive.
He is a very good athlete. He is a natural goalkeeper. She has a Body Type. He’s flexible, fast and fast, Hall said. He’s also confident and it’s a big X factor for the goalkeeper.
He also said he found him a coach to train who wants to develop.
Hall and Szyszka said the USHL will be an excellent development league for him because it has so many talented players who will continue to play Division I hockey.
Szyszka said he plans to work in all areas of the game, including more effective puck tracking and adapting to a faster pace.
Her admission to UMaine depends on her being admitted to school and meeting the NCAA eligibility requirements.
