Australian Olympic swimmer Madi Wilson said she received a positive Covid-19 test and was hospitalized in Italy as a precaution against “underlying chest and lung problems”.

Wilson, 27, reported the matter In Instagram post on Sunday.

The swimmer, who competes with the Los Angeles Current team in the International Swimming League (ISL), wrote that his test was positive, even though he has been “double vaccinated and put in place the right precautions through the ISL.”

Wilson was in Naples, Italy, for the ISL, but said he is now forced to miss the next match.

“Covid is a serious matter, and when it comes, it hits very hard,” he wrote. “I would be foolish to say I wasn’t scared.”

Wilson speculated that he could have been more susceptible to a breakthrough Covid infection after a “crazy few months,” including the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics, which had left him “physically and mentally.”

Wilson said he hoped to “recover quickly.”

In his later Instagram story on Monday, Wilson encouraged people to get vaccinated. He said that although his test was positive, his vaccine reduced symptoms and “protected people around me that I have been close to in the last period”.

“Keep vaccinating,” he said.

Wilson has been awarded several medals, including gold, for swimming in Australia, both at the 2016 Rio Olympics and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
