There are no special quarantine agreements for English ash cricketers, despite the fact that the tour could collapse

British cricketers traveling to Australia for this summer’s Ashes series will not receive “special offers” to allow their partner or family to follow them, Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced.

While the English cricket team may come under the Australian special exemption, at this stage their partners or families are not allowed to join them.

Several players said they would boycott the test if their loved ones could not travel.

At a dinner in Washington this week, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned Morrison that the entire tour could collapse if existing rules are not relaxed.

According to Australia’s national plan, after a pandemic, international borders will open up for those vaccinated, with 80 per cent of Australians over the age of 16 receiving a double dose.

Speaking to Washington reporters, Morrison said no additional exemptions were granted.

“I’d like to see the ashes go forward, like I shared with Boris last night,” he told reporters in Washington.

“I don’t see a big difference in the skilled workers or students who can come to Australia when you get vaccinated.

“Those who come for this purpose when it comes to their profession, which is playing cricket, I don’t see a difference between it and someone who comes as a skilled, qualified engineer or someone who is willing to study.”

The English team is scheduled to arrive in Australia in November before the first test in Brisbane in December.

But some infant cricketers, such as Ben Stokes or Jos Buttler, are likely to first play in the T20 World Cup in the UAE before flying directly to Australia, meaning they can spend months without seeing anyone other than their teammates.

Cricket Australia is in talks with the state and federal government on player quarantine arrangements.

It managed to secure exceptions last summer for the families of Indian players, and a spokesman said they were “very confident that the whole crowd would come and play all five tests.”

The situation is politically challenging for Mr Morrison, as many Australian citizens get stuck abroad due to closed borders and limited quarantine capacity.

Granting travel exemptions to the families of famous foreign cricketers would likely lead to criticism because some Australians have not seen their loved ones since the pandemic began.

As the introduction of vaccines in Australia begins to accelerate, Morrison said the nation is approaching opening its borders.

“This week, we get three-quarters of Australians over the age of 16 with the first dose, and every second we get the second dose. And the number of vaccinations continues to grow,” he said.

“And as they rise, the chances of returning to a normal life, as it can live with a virus, only come closer every day.”
