Cricket’s, a facility on Sayvilles Main Street for decades, will close this weekend.
Peter Marino, owner of the iconic restaurant, will retire and the restaurant will close after Saturday, September 25th. And while many customers are happy with Marino and his family, they are also saddened by losing what many call Sayville’s version of “Cheers.”
As the news spread to the city, dozens and dozens of customers arrived at the restaurant and jumped onto Cricket’s Facebook page on Friday to wish Marino good luck and thank Marino, her family and staff for all the wonderful memories and good food and drink.
“Thank you Peter! I grew up in circuses (sic) with my grandparents, parents and later my own children,” Tina Christiansen wrote. was the place to go! It’s the end of the era! Crickets was our small town Cheers! Enjoy the next episode of your life !! ”
Cricket’s posted a sign on Facebook for dinner on Friday that read, “We’re overwhelmed and disabled. Wait for long waiting times. Thank you for your understanding.”
Claudia Carpenter responded to the comment section: “Enjoy your retirement, Pete and Cookie. Sayville is forever better because of everything you have done for our community. “
Customers seemed most regretted about the closure of Cricket when they imagined downtown Sayville without the friendly inviting atmosphere that Cricket’s, a pillar of Sayville has provided for over 35 years.
“Thank you so much Pete for your many years of service,” Pat Bryson Laskowitz commented on Facebook. “We’re really going to miss Crickets. We miss the kind faces that greet us every time we were there. Wonderful retirement age. “
