C-NS field puck avenges defeat to FM with 2-1 win (65 shots)

The Cicero-North Syracuse field hockey team suffered a rough stretch last week and lost one-goal matches to Salt City Sports Conference opponents Baldwinsville and Fayetteville-Manlius.

Host Northstars got some revenge by winning 2-1 FM on Tuesday. Cicero-North Syracuse scored from the freshman Nicole Conklin and the second year Sophia Melfi, the second came four minutes left in the third quarter to a 2-0 lead. Carine Smith reduced the deficit with Hornets ’third set goals, but Northstars’ defense remained strong in the fourth quarter due to a win.

After the win, we asked Northstars coach Patrick Kennedy a few questions:

Q. How important was the victory for your team after one goal for Baldwinsville and FM?

A. This game against FM was very important to us tonight. If we lose, we will be left with a lot left in the rest of the league. If we win, we will feel like we are on the hunt again and staying at a striking distance from Baldwinsville, which is currently in first place. We played well in both of our single goal losses, but unfortunately we stayed a little in the scoring column.

Q. C-NS got his goals from freshman Nicole Conklin and sophomore Sophia Melfi, both of their first goals of the season. Can you tell us a little bit about both?

A. Nicole and Sophia both stepped up when we needed them tonight. Both have worked very hard this season, and it was great to see that they both scored today. Sophia and Nicole have both played several roles for us this year and they are fully committed to doing their best to help the team.

Q. Did the Hornets do anything special to keep Christina Wagner off the scoreboard today?

A. FM has a great team and a very strong defense unit. They are very difficult to make and you always know that you are in a fight when you play them. FM made it difficult for Chrissy Wagner to get high-quality shots tonight by sending several players to him. Chrissy is a tough competitor and I’m really glad she’s playing for us. Thanks to his high level of play, the other teammates got an open look throughout the game tonight.
