Women’s tennis concludes with a flat weekend in the Bedford Cup

TAMPA, Fla. The FGCU women’s tennis team started the season 2021-22 this weekend in Tampa when they participated in the Bedford Cup.

Freshman Isabella Colmenares (San Cristobal, Venezuela / Colegio Juan XXIII) won the flight B title by going 5-0 in three days. He won the title on Sunday morning by taking down Sierra Berry from the USF, 6-3, 1-6, 10-5. Colmenares almost won the duel title as well as he and the junior Alba Retortillo (Leon, Spain / La Anungiata) won three matches before relegating to the finals.

– This weekend was a great way to start the fall season, the head coach said Courtney Vernon. “Send Alba [Retortillo] and Father [Colmenares] in the doubles final and getting Isa to win the doubles championship is a huge achievement for the freshman. We are working to build this weekend and we are grateful for the opportunity to compete. “

On the first day of the tournament on Friday, Colemenares took four wins, two singles and two doubles. She defeated Anique Kattenberg (UCF) 6-2, 6-4 before beating Margriet Timmermans (USF) 6-1, 6-7 (7), 10-8, while she and Retortillo defeated FAU and UNF teams to advance to the semi-finals in doubles.

Retortillo also won the single victory on Friday and took Millie-Mae Matthews from the FAU 6-4, 7-5.

Junior Ida Ferding (Vasteras, Spain / Akademi Bastad Gymnasium) and sophomore Jordana Ossa (Miami, Fla./John A.Ferguson Senior HS / Wisconsin) also rose to direct series wins on Friday.

Ferding and junior Emma Bardet (Vichy, France / State of Long Beach) won a pair from the USF with a double win, while a sophomore Fanny Norin (Stockholm, Sweden) and Ossa won the duets from Bethune-Cookman and North Florida on Friday.

On Saturday, Colmenares won the final with Ines Bekrar 6-1, 6-2 and USF Grace Eland 5-7, 6-2, 10-7 to reach the final. In the duel, he and Retortillo won the FIU pair 6-2 in the semifinals.

Also on Saturday, Ossa won a tight 1-6, 6-2, 10-8 win over Stetson’s Tess Menten before beating Anslee Long (UNF) 6-2, 2-6, 10-8.

Norin won FAU Katerina Filip on Saturday with goals 3-6, 7-5, 10-7 Lola Glantz (Lueneberg, Germany) took their first win of the weekend by beating Stetson’s Laia Pasin 6-1, 6-3.

The Eagles will return to action as they compete in the ITA Regionals 14-17. October in Orlando.
