Women’s hockey sweeps UNH in the season opener-The Daily Free Press

The Boston University women’s hockey team started their season strongly this weekend. The Terriers (2-0) played a consecutive win on Friday 4-2 and a 5-0 win on Saturday at Walter Brown Arena.

Durham’s Friday race started BU nicely, and Wildcat freshman striker Kira Juodikis scored just 22 seconds in the first period and scored his first collegial goal, but not the only one from his match. Juodikis led his team to a 2-1 lead after BU striker Mackenna Parkers ’match goal 3:40.

Freshman net Callie Shanahan started between the terriers ’tubes and found her career by the end of the opening frame. Giving up his first net shot didn’t stop him from bouncing back and becoming big on his team all weekend.

Shanahan got his first collegial lockout with 16 fights on Saturday afternoon, proving to be a competitive start for the group in the absence of Kate Stuarts. At a post-match press conference on Saturday, head coach Brian Durocher confirmed Stuart will return next weekend.

The terriers showed resilience in the second period and got their way into the lead by the end of 40 minutes. Senior striker Courtney Correia stripped the puck of the UNH player and blackmailed one of the net goalkeeper’s older goalkeepers, Ava Boutilier, to conclude the race with two pieces early.

Junior striker Julia Nearis, who had to be taken into account throughout the series, made the winning game at 12:07, giving the terriers the first lead of the night. Hanging next to the door, Nearis knocked one from the right side and made it 3-2 in the final frame.

The Wildcats put pressure on BU during the third period, trying to get themselves back on the scoreboard, but eventually fell short. Senior defender Alex Allans, after an empty goal at the end of the third set, sealed the contract to the Terriers as they collected a win in the column in the first game of the season.

The group relied on their veteran players to get the team moving while he followed the Wildcats. Durocher said senior leadership is something that is very important to the group this season, especially for Parkers ’impressive play.

BU had three goals in the middle frame, one of which was a collegial first for freshman striker Kylie Roberts with the help of Nearis. Second-year defender Julia Shaunessy blew one off the blue line at 7:40, adding to the Wildcats ’3-0 loss. Parker added one more count to the terriers before the end of the period in the right circle that flowed past the Boutiliers finish line.

Reddish brown and white didn’t take their feet off the accelerator pedal in the last 20 minutes. During some four or four hockey sticks, Nearis hung effortlessly through the UNH defender to release a snapshot that rose directly behind the net to get the BU to score 5-0.

The success of the Terriers this weekend was really teamwork as they got their input from all the lineups up and down, speaking of the depth this team seems to have at the beginning of the season.

BU will return to Durham to face the Wildcats next Saturday after he has hosted Northeastern University huskies at Walter Brown Arena on Friday at 7 p.m.
