The 31-year-old, who recently completed a ban on corruption, is weighing his options, including the long-term future of cricket in the United States
Umar Akmal has left Pakistan during the interim to try out opportunities to play league cricket in the United States. He has signed a short-term deal with the Northern California Cricket Association, but is ready to weigh his options, including a long-term deal that will sever his allegiance to Pakistani cricket. He will represent California Zalmia in the Premier C season.
Akmal was recently integrated into cricket after he had denied violating the PCB’s anti-corruption code, but ESPNcricinfo understands that his return was not well received in the district. The circuit board helped him follow his rehabilitation program, but his selection for the best teams in the country remained to be seen. He was asked to play on the second XI team instead of the first XI team, so he has not been involved in the ongoing National T20 Cup, which was at odds with his expectation of returning from where he left off, at the top level. After making 0, 14, 7, 16 and 29 Central Punjab Second XI events at the PCB Cricket Association Association T20, he decided to move away from domestic cricket – at least for now.
It’s not clear if Akmal will miss the entire season, with the first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy starting on October 20 and the One-Day Cup on February 25. But his future is uncertain and no buyers in the six provincial associations, he has decided to pursue his goals elsewhere. His family has confirmed he left for the United States, but claim that his older brother Kamran – three of Akmal’s siblings have played test cricket for Pakistan – was not involved in his decision-making.
One family member expressed his view that Umar Akmal had been subjected to biased treatment. “A few others were banned on higher charges, but they received unprecedented support to return. The system was never fair to Umar. A few players in poor condition were blatantly selected, but the benchmark was tightened on him. [Umar] to make sure you keep him away. “
The family member did not mention the players, but it has understood that the PCB had relaxed its fitness conditions to include Azam Khan, Sohaib Maqsood and Sharjeel Khan in the national line-up. However, a comparison to Akmal’s case is not very appropriate given his troubled past with almost all head coaches who have taken over the national team over the last 10 years, and Waqar Younis once wrote in his report that he sacrificed “one Umar” Akmal allows us to develop others players who can truly and proudly wear a star on their chest and represent Pakistan. “He urged the PCB to make Umar understand the value of playing in Pakistan and earn his place by playing domestic cricket.
Akmal, 31, has coughed a lot of fines during his career, but the recent ban has hit him the hardest. After a long legal battle with the PCB, the Sports Arbitration Court (CAS) shortened his 18-month ban by six months, giving him the right to return prematurely to representative cricket. He had originally been banned for three years because he had not informed him of the promotion methods made before the start of the 2020 PSL. He admitted some of the charges but never accepted the length of the sentence, and the lawyer referred to similar cases from the past to build a case where other similar charges had been prohibited for a shorter period. After two complaints, one with the PCB arbitrator and one with the CAS, his ban was first shortened to one and a half years and then by another month.
Akmal’s career has been plagued by several disciplinary issues that have often overshadowed his cricket. He exploded into the international arena in 2009 at the age of 19 with great promise and scored 129 and 75 points in a test presentation in New Zealand. He also made his century in only his third ODI and became a hot commodity overnight. Pakistan was seemingly blessed with a medium-sized dough of all sizes with all the talents of the world. But his inconsistency and difficult relationship with the circuit board and team management led to his career gradually collapsing. After 16 tests in 2009-2011, he never used Pakistani whites again, and although he continued to play with 121 ODIs and 84 T20Is, his career seemed to come to a halt in 2017, and a return in 2019 after Misbah-ul-Haq to power Pakistan as a coach – turns out to be short.
Then in February 2020, an hour before the opening match of the PSL season, he was suspended and his career was really in the wilderness.
Akmal’s move to California could be the beginning of exploring longer-term opportunities in the United States. U.S. Cricket, along with its commercial partner ACE (American Cricket Enterprises), has stepped up its efforts to invite foreign professionals to small and large cricket confederations and pulled former international members into a three-year residency path to exchange allegiances and represent the U.S.. Former Pakistan opener Sami Aslam is one of many players from different countries to make a deal and move to the United States, and there are dozens of other cricketers in Pakistan who are ready to take the opportunity. It has been confirmed that Umar has not yet received an offer, but his first shift in California could continue to determine his career.
