Sangsu writes history to win the Asian table tennis title

Lee Sangsu made history at Lusail Sports Hall yesterday when he became the first South Korean man to win a doubles championship at the Asian Table Tennis Championships.
In the final, the third seed Sangsu took China’s Taipei Chuang Chih-Yuan, No. 4 seed, in an exciting five-game encounter 12-10, 6-11, 6-11, 11-7, 11-8.
In the semifinals, Sangsu had beaten Japan’s 17th-place finisher Shunsuke Togam 8-11, 13-11, 12-10, 11-6, hile Chuang won 6-11, 14-12, 11-7, 11-9 top seed Jang Woo- Jin from South Korea.
Chuang took the first game 12-10 in less than 13 minutes, but Lee jumped back to take the second and third games. However, the number four seed stifled Korean attempts to close the match in the fourth as he leveled 2-2 and pushed the championship finals into the fifth set final.
In the final game, after locking the readings 6-6, Sangsu demanded a couple of decisive points before the match ended.
South Koreans also won the women’s singles title when top seed Jeon Ji-hee and Shin Yubin defeated Hong Kong’s fifth seed Doo Hoi Kem and Lee Ho Ching 11-5, 7-11, 11-3, 11-4.
Jeon and Shin had nicely beat Japan’s sixth seed Miyu Nagasaki and Minami Ando in the semifinals 11-8, 11-8, 11-9, and Doo and Lee beat second seed Chinese Cheng Hsien-Tzu and Liu Hsing-Yin Taipei 11-9, 11 -1, 11-3.
