The first day of the UEFA Women’s Champions League brought impressive performances from established forces from Lyon and Barcelona, while the newer names Hoffenheim and Benfica proved their worth.

Group C
Barcelona 4-1 Arsenal
The owners announced their goals at the dominant show against the 2007 winners and created a nice lead with Mariona Caldentey and Alexia Putellas in close proximity. Asisat Oshoala and Lieke Martens made clinical finishes on both sides of Frida Maanum’s response after the break. Manuel Zinsberger saved the last breath penalty from Alexia, who received the UEFA Player of the Year award on the field before the game.
Hoffenheim 5-0 HB Kge
At the two-team meeting, Hoffenheim made an elegant performance against the Danish champions in his first European campaigns. A thrilling play through the middle 18 minutes into the match gave Katharina Naschenwengs’s Nicole Billa a chance to increase the lead, and he did not disappoint. Luana Bhler created a brilliant opportunistic long-range third and the Tine De Caigny double confirmed the result.

Group D
Hcken 0-3 Lyon
Seven-time winner Lyon made it past Hcken. Melvine Malard hit the first-ever group stage after just ten minutes, and Catarina Macario doubled the lead shortly after halftime. The misery of the Swedish Champions was exacerbated when Stine Larsen pushed Selma Bach’s corner into her own nets and made a perfect evening for Lyon, who is the best scorer of all time. Ada Hegerberg was taken from the bench for the first time after a serious injury in January 2020.
Benfica 0-0 Bayern Munich
Benfica was the first Portuguese team to ever reach the last 16 forms of this competition in any form. Bayern scored 15 goals but Benfca’s goalkeeper Letcia proved invincible. Clo Lacasse’s two low positions were as close as Benfica won the shock.
