Football Australia has urged players to come forward and make official complaints after Matildas brilliant Lisa De Vanna has filed abuse.
De Vanna, Australia’s second most productive scorer, claims to have gone through sexual harassment, inappropriate assault, caring and bullying older players throughout his career.
Speaking to News Corp, De Vanna said he saw cultural problems at all levels during his 20-year career and that the behavior had to have consequences and responsibilities.
Another player, Rhali Dobson, also claims to be the target of predatory behavior.
In a statement released late Tuesday, the FA said it adheres to zero tolerance for any activity that violates the standards and values expected of the people involved in the game.
The FA said it met with De Vanna and was aware of his complaints, but no specific allegations were made at the meeting on Tuesday.
The governing body of the games called on De Vanha and others to make formal complaints, saying it could be thoroughly investigated.
We have no information on what action, if any of our predecessor, Soccer Australia, took in 2001, the FA said. If Lisa decides to make a formal complaint through the appropriate channels, we may investigate and, if necessary, act accordingly.
The same process is open to Rhali Dobson and other former players and staff to formally submit all claims.
At the same time, the FA is working to create an additional process to independently investigate allegations of historical abuse made by former players or staff in conjunction with Sport Integrity Australia. The details of the initiative are still final.
Professional footballers Australian CEOs Beau Busch and Kathryn Gill said they were very concerned about the players ’claims.
All players should feel safe, involved and respected, the statement will be read. It is crucial that sport provides a safe and inclusive workplace and, most importantly, that players are supported.
PFA has strengthened all support and reporting mechanisms available to players and continues to ensure that all PFA resources are available to all current and former players.
It comes after suspicions of violent behavior in the U.S. National Women’s Football League and anger at the league’s reactions, which led to the departure of one of the league’s most successful coaches, Paul Riley, and NWSL Commissioner Lisa Baird.
De Vanna responded to a comment from U.S. star Megan Rapinoe on social media, saying she had seen: Women protect women who exploit women. Players who protect players who abuse younger players. Organizations that protect coaches / players who exploit players. Abuse is abuse. Bad behavior is bad on all boards!
De Vanna played 150 matches in Australia and scored 47 goals. His international career ended last month when he officially retired when a new one spotted him Matildas coach Tony Gustavsson.
