Women’s Golf Poles-Top Five Goals

WILMETTE, Ill. The Oregon women’s golf team finished fifth in their second tournament this fall when the Windy City Classic ended in the best round of the week on Tuesday at Westmoreland Country Club.

The Ducks finished in tournament 35 with over 899, heading 7 over 295 in the third and final round. It was a three-stroke improvement from Monday’s second round and 11 beats better than Oregon’s opening 18 holes. Stanford won the team title with 14 pairs.

It’s the second straight in the top five, opening the fall for the Ducks, who started 2021-22 with a dominant win last weekend at the Mason Rudolph Championship. Oregon is now in the top five in 14 of its last 16 tournaments from 2019-20 and 20 of 27 tournaments after the head coach Derek Radley took over the 2018-19 season.

“This was a pretty demanding golf course with tough conditions this week,” Radley said. – It certainly wasn’t as easy for us as it was on our first tournament, but I’m proud of how our team fought and rose in the Leaderboard yesterday after a slow start.

“This is a very flexible team and they do a tremendous job fighting and playing for each other. I’m impressed with the way they stayed in it and honed their way to the top five.”

How did it happen: Junior Ching-Tzu Chen ended Oregon’s number one and shot another straight 1-over 73 on Tuesday and finished 11th overall with a 6-over. Chen had 2 over rounds in the final round before shooting 1 under the last nine holes.

Senior Tze-Han (Heather) Lin was one shot behind Chen and finished 12th overall. Oregon was one of four teams on the field, placing two people in the top 15.

Junior Sofie Kibsgaard Nielsen was the top player for the Ducks on Tuesday, and this week became a lone Oregon player who shot under one under 71. Nielsen had 2 over 14 holes before shooting three consecutive birds to reach under a pair.

Junior Briana Chacon came back nicely after a couple of hard laps on Monday and increased the team’s score by 3 over 75 in the final round. Second year student Hsin-Yu (Cynthia) Lu Lin hit 4 over 76 to round out the count and finished Oregon as the third highest person in the draw in 27th place at 11 par.

What does it mean: The Ducks didn’t play his purest golf, but still managed to get into the top five when playing a hard course in difficult conditions. This speaks to the overall talent of the Oregon lineup that was fully featured during Ducks ’historic victory at last weekend’s fall opening.

Please note: Oregon led the field 170 total for the week, and the Ducks had an overall under-par-par-5 hole Lin had 2 under-par-5 holes, while Chen and Lu each had 1 Chacon and Chen tied the team lead by 37 pieces, exactly the fourth most on the field. Lin and Nielsen both had seven bird games to equalize the team’s lead.

Next: Ducks will be back in action October 15-17. At the Stanford Intercollegiate, the third of four tournaments in the fall.
