Men’s tennis opens the Redbird invitation game on Friday

The CHICAGO DePaul men’s tennis team opens the game on Friday at the Redbird Invitational, hosted by the state of Illinois just two days after the coach Matt Brothers, Vito Tonejc, Tripp Tuff, Luuk Wassenaar and freshman Marino Jakic returned from the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla.

The Blue Demons performed well on the national stage and are now part of an eight-team field that joins Downstate Normal.

The “Band of Brothers” includes host Redbirds, Eastern Illinois, Drake, Saint Louis, Bellarmine, UIC and Marquette.

They play the Davis Cup format on three flights — one doubles and one doubles.

Foursome is a professional series of eight games with a tie of 7-7. Singles on Friday have two of three sets and a 10-point breaker instead of the third set. Saturday and Sunday are traditional two of three complete series.

Tuff has started a quick match with a record 7-2 and has won six of their last seven matches. Freshman Matteo Iaquinto is 5-1 while Lars Peder Minsaas is 4-2.

Vito Tonejc is 6-5 when he has done very well against high-level national competitions in the ITA All-American Championships. Luuk Wassenaar is 3-2 and freshman Sven Moser is 4-3.

In doubles, Leon Huck and Wassenaar have both won their matches Jona Gitschel and Minsaas is 2-1.
