A survey of USA TODAY Sports AFCA coaches and the AP Top 25 have their views on who the top teams are in college football, but advanced analytics tell a different story.
ESPN FPI is a more predictive model based on efficiency that measures team strength This often means that it is based on actual implementation rather than head-to-head matches, and although it takes some of it into account unlike some other advanced statistical services.
This means that the ESPN FPI has a number of the top 25 who may not even get votes, as in the four-loss Nebraska polls, for example. According to this view, teams may not be penalized by playing on a tight schedule and losing as long as they are competitive.
