The Britains Curls take over Moneyball to gain an advantage over their competitors Winter Olympics. On Thursday, Team GB nominated their first six athletes to Beijing in 2022, with world champion Bruce Mouat earning double gold in the mixed and men’s tournament.
The 27-year-old from Edinburgh believes the use of data and analytics could make an impact in February, as it will help them better prepare for their opponents and give them a better idea of what to do at crucial points in matches.
I don’t think we can have too much data, he said. If we had to make a difficult choice, one option can give us a 60% chance of winning, but if we choose another, we can only have a 40% chance. So that information was now tried to be taken into account during every game.
We are always looking for the extra one or two percent we can find to win the best in the world. Much of the work in UK sports and lottery funding has been able to support us in video analysis, opposition and different game scenarios.
The use of analytics is already helping British teams. Mouat and his teammate Jen Dodds will leave for Beijing after winning the mixed world championship in April. Mouat also leads the formal men’s team Grant Hardie, Bobby Lammie, Hammy McMillan and booking Ross Whyte, who has risen steadily in the world rankings after winning silver.
Getting this information is important, Mouat said. But curling is also quite a physical sport, so you need to be able to be a good athlete as well as strategy. Probably that’s why I love sports so much. It’s not just about physicality, but how strategic and bold you are to be two steps ahead of your opponent.
Dodds said: Choosing for the first Olympics means so much. That is something we have been striving for for years.
It means a lot to be on a team with Bruce. We have known each other for so long. We started with the same club, so sharing this moment together is something really special.

British Curling executive director Nigel Holl said the recent success of the teams on the world stage demonstrated the benefits of internal competition as international competition became impossible during the closure. The athletes responded brilliantly, and we’re glad Bruce, Jen, Grant, Bobby, Hammy and Ross have earned this opportunity to make their Olympic debut, he said.
