The Wolverines victim leads the No. 1 shootout in Iowa

No. 2 Michigan dropped to 1st place in Iowa 2-1 in the fifth round of the playoffs and lost its first season in 2021.
Keeper Anna Spieker earned five fights, three in overtime, and made three stops in the match before Iowa managed to fend off its final attempt.
Kathryn Peterson broke an unbeaten draw from a penalty angle at 33:04 before Iowa leveled the score at his own angle when the game was only 2:46.

IOWA CITY, Iowa -The No. 2 ranked University of Michigan field hockey team sacrificed a late stroke to drop a 2-1 heartbreaker by shooting against Iowa on Friday afternoon (October 15) at Grant Field. In a match of individual unbeaten teams, UM suffered their first loss in the 2021 season.

It came down to fifth and final shooter when both teams left their first three attempts. Iowa took the lead in the round as a senior goalkeeper Anna Spieker slipped out of the cage and after UM’s fifth attempt, Sofie Stribos of Hawkeyes grabbed it and got Spieker down on the lawn before lifting the shot into the open cage.

Spieker was great in the race when sending five fights, including a jaw drop in the second overtime, which won his five holes, but he fell on the ball to prevent it from crossing the line. Spieker also defended Iowa’s penalty shot a minute later in the second overtime when Iowa blew up his shots from the crossbar. He made a total of three stops in overtime frames.

Michigan (11-1, 3-1 Big Ten) led in the final two minutes when he broke a goalless draw from the first corner of the race at 33:04. Senior Kathryn Peterson both started and ended the game and added it before getting the ball back from the second class Anouk Veen and lifting high into the cage on the left side. It was his third goal of the season.

Iowa (15-0, 6-0 Big Ten) answered with their own corner 57:14, only 2:46 left when Anthe Nijzel scored a goal directly to the lower left corner of the UM cage. Michigan defended Iowa’s corner pairs in the fourth and had just killed a five-minute yellow card — his second half — when Hawkeyes pulled his goalkeeper from an additional striker late.

Iowa beat the Wolverines 14-10 and surpassed them 7-2, but overtime was largely dominated by Michigan. Senior Katie Anderson there was a big change in the shot from the top of the circle early, while the Ministry of Foreign Affairs left the penalty angle in the first extra time — with a five-year-old Hall O’Neillshot blocked from the finish line.

Wolverines will turn their way to swing against Indiana on Sunday (October 17). The game is scheduled for noon at the IU Field Hockey Complex and will be broadcast live on the B1G + channel.
