Water bottles, pizza boxes and beer bottles smashed the course, and the thrown golf ball hit Rebels coach Lane Kiffin.
Southeast Conference commissioner Greg Sankey called fan action “impossible” and said the league “is reviewing the conference’s current practices and the commissioner’s powers to impose sanctions and communicate with the University of Tennessee leadership.”
Kiffin, who returned to Knoxville for the first time since 2009 when he coached volunteers for a 7-6 season, said after the game that he felt relieved.
“They just threw stuff and I just said put on a helmet and played. In fact, there were people who got us out,” Kiffin said on the field. “They’re passionate fans, and 100,000 people came to watch the show. It didn’t end the way they wanted, so that’s what it is.”
Kiffin’s father Monte had to be brought off the field, as well as the rebel coach’s sister Heidi, according to ESPN.
“The conference has set expectations for behavior and athleticism, and fan activity in the Saturday night game was not acceptable under any circumstances,” Sankey said in a statement. “We are used to the tough competition every week, but under no circumstances is it acceptable to endanger the participants in the competition and disrupt the game.”
Tennessee Chancellor Donde Plowman condemned fan behavior on Twitter.
He added that he would personally apologize to Mississippi Chancellor Glenn Boycel for the fan’s actions.
Danny White, Tennessee vice chancellor / athletics director, reiterated Plowman’s statement and apologized for the Mississippi football program.
“Our Tennessee fans had a lot of pride through Saturday night’s 59-minute football, and they created one of the best live sports moods I’ve ever experienced, but what happened in the last minute of the game wasn’t acceptable,” White said in a statement.
“The safety of players and fans is paramount. While I am incredibly proud of our team’s efforts on the field, I am disappointed that their relentless performance overshadowed the actions of several fans in the final moments of the game whose actions do not represent volunteerism or the true nature of our university.”
As for the game, No. 13 rebels won 31-26 and improved overall 5-1, SEC 2-1. Volunteers dropped 4-3 overall, 2-2 in the conference game.
